On September 18, the Department of Health of Ninh Thuan province reported to the People's Committee of Ninh Thuan province about food poisoning due to eating puffer fish that occurred in Ca Na commune, Thuan Nam district, causing 1 death and 2 others to be hospitalized.
Previously, at noon on September 15, Mr. HVC (35 years old), Mr. D.VP (34 years old, both in Lac Nghiep 1 village, Ca Na commune, Thuan Nam district) and Mr. D.TT (35 years old, in village 2, Nhi Ha commune, Thuan Nam district) went to sea to catch a puffer fish weighing about 2 kg.
The poison in puffer fish is tetrodotoxin.
Then, this group of people brought it to Mr. T's farm (in Vinh Tan commune, Tuy Phong district, Binh Thuan province) to cook sour soup to eat with rice and drink wine.
At around 1:20 p.m. the same day, the three people all had symptoms such as: numbness of lips, numbness of tongue, numbness of hands, numbness of feet, fatigue, dizziness..., so they went to Ca Na Commune Health Station to receive first aid. Afterwards, Ca Na Commune Health Station transferred the three men to Thuan Nam District Health Center for emergency treatment.
At 2:45 p.m. the same day, Thuan Nam Medical Center transferred the three men to Ninh Thuan Provincial General Hospital for continued emergency care and treatment.
By dawn on September 16, Mr. C. had died, while Mr. T. and Mr. P. were in stable health and were being treated at the hospital.
Ninh Thuan Department of Health said that through investigation of food poisoning and clinical developments, it was determined that this was a case of food poisoning. Specifically, the 3 patients above were poisoned by tetrodotoxin in puffer fish.
