The Indian government on April 25 issued a statement denying any immediate impact from a World Trade Organization (WTO) panel ruling that the Asian country had violated global trade rules by imposing tariffs on some information technology products.
“Under the existing Dispute Settlement procedures, India is taking the necessary steps and is also exploring the options available to it based on its rights and obligations under the WTO,” the statement said.
Such options may include a plan to appeal the ruling.
Last week, a WTO panel issued a ruling related to a 2019 dispute with the European Union (EU), Japan and Taiwan over import duties on information technology products.
In 2019, the EU objected to India's imposition of import duties ranging from 7.5% to 20% on a wide range of information technology products, such as mobile phones and components, as well as integrated circuits, arguing that they exceeded the maximum rates.
Japan and Taiwan filed similar complaints that same year.
