India is set to buy 12 Russian-designed fighter jets as part of a 450 billion rupee ($5.9 billion) spending package approved by the country’s defense ministry on September 15, RT reported.

The decision was taken by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), the highest decision-making body of the Indian Ministry of Defence. The Su-30 MKI fighter jets will be manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL - India) for the Indian Air Force under the licenses that have been granted.

An Indian defense source revealed that in this deal, more than 60% of the components will be domestically manufactured and equipped with many home-made weapons and sensors, ANI reported.

The Indian Air Force currently operates around 260 fourth-generation Su-30 MKI fighters, over 220 of which were assembled by HAL at its Nashik facility under a license agreement following technology transfer from Russia to India. The Su-30 MKI has emerged as a key asset to the Indian Air Force’s capabilities.

Other purchases approved under the spending plan include light multi-purpose armored vehicles (LAMV) and integrated surveillance and targeting systems (ISAT-S) to enhance India's defense and offensive capabilities, RT reported.

High Mobility Vehicles (HMVs) will also be procured under this military package. In addition, the DAC has also approved the purchase of next-generation survey vessels for the Indian Navy.
