India's weather department has issued an orange alert for the capital Delhi, the second highest level of warning, and forecast dense to very dense fog in many areas.
Visibility at Delhi's main airport ranged from 0-100 metres and more than 40 trains across northern India were delayed due to the fog.
Several flights departing from Delhi have also been hit by the same problem. In particular, the airport authority has warned that flights not equipped with CAT III navigation systems – which allow landings in low visibility conditions – will have trouble arriving there.
"Limited visibility and foggy conditions in Delhi may cause some delays," India's largest airline IndiGo posted on social media.
Local media also broadcast images of vehicles moving slowly on highways amid thick fog, while people huddled at home as temperatures dropped to 7 degrees Celsius.
On January 15, Delhi ranked as the most polluted city in the world according to the ranking of the Swiss organization IQAir, with a measurement index of 254, in the "very unhealthy" level.
Delhi has been facing severe poor air quality and smog since the beginning of winter 2024.
