On September 9, Mr. Luong Hau Tan, Director of Tuan Giao District Medical Center, Dien Bien province, said that on September 8, the center received 40 students from Mun Chung Ethnic Boarding School and Secondary School suspected of poisoning.
The vông fruit is a wild fruit that is sweet and fatty but poisonous if eaten.
Accordingly, the above students were all hospitalized with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. Tests showed signs of poisoning. Information from these students said that on the afternoon of September 8, after school, some of them picked vông fruits and brought them back to the boarding area to eat with their friends. After that, they had symptoms of nausea.
The vông fruit is the fruit of a wild tree that grows abundantly in the highlands. This tree is planted by many families as a hedge, not for its fruit. The vông fruit has a sweet, nutty taste but is poisonous if eaten.
Immediately after learning of the situation, the teachers quickly reported it to the school board and the Departmentof Education and Training of Tuan Giao district. The school immediately took the children to the hospital.
At the District Medical Center, the students were treated according to the wild fruit poisoning protocol. By the morning of September 9, all 40 students were stable, no longer vomiting or having diarrhea, so they were discharged from the hospital.
Doctors recommend that families and teachers should pay attention and educate children not to eat strange fruits. When eating strange fruits and having signs of stomachache and nausea of poisoning, children should be quickly taken to the nearest medical facility to promptly determine the cause.
