According to TechSpot , Android 16 will be a major turning point, forcing app developers to design 'adaptive' user interfaces (UIs), capable of automatically adjusting to display optimally on any screen size and orientation.

According to Google, the Android ecosystem is incredibly diverse, with more than 3 billion devices, from phones, tablets, foldables to Chromebooks and in-car infotainment systems. This requires apps to be able to work smoothly across all platforms.

However, many current Android apps are still quite 'rigid' with fixed UI designs that only fit a certain screen size or orientation. Android 16 will put an end to this by removing the properties and APIs that let apps restrict orientation and resize, at least on large screens.

Google encourages developers to adopt responsive UI design, ensuring UI elements don't stretch, accommodate cameras in both orientations, and maintain application state across different window sizes.

The company also gave the example of FlipaClip, which grew its tablet users by 54% in just four months thanks to UI optimization.

Android 16 is expected to launch in 2025 with an option for apps to opt out of the new model. However, by 2026, all apps that want to run on Android will be required to support large screens and comply with adaptive UI regulations.

Google's decision is expected to bring a better user experience, while encouraging developers to create high-quality applications that fit the diversity of the Android ecosystem.
