Argentina's National Electoral Authority (DINE) said that none of the five presidential candidates won enough votes to declare victory in the general election on October 22.
According to AP, with 98.3% of the votes counted, candidate Sergio Massa nominated by the center-left ruling coalition Unión por la Patria (Union for the Fatherland) is leading with 36.4% of the votes.
In second place was far-right Congressman Javier Milei with 30.1% and in third place was the chairwoman of the Republican Proposal party, Patricia Bullrich, with 23.8% of the vote.
The Argentine constitution stipulates that to win a presidential election, a candidate must win at least 45% of the vote, or 40% of the vote with a margin of at least 10% over the second-place candidate. Thus, Argentina will have to conduct a second round of elections to elect a new leader for the 2023-2027 term on November 19, with two candidates, Massa and Milei.
