Aubameyang, the former Borussia Dortmund striker, was once one of Europe's top strikers. |
On the morning of August 1, Marseille Club announced that Aubameyang signed a 2-year contract with the Ligue 1 team. According to L'Équipe , to return to Marseille, the former Arsenal striker accepted a significant salary reduction compared to his previous income in Saudi Arabia.
The 36-year-old striker only joined Al Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League from Marseille last summer, but left the Saudi Arabian club earlier this month on a free transfer. Last season, Aubameyang scored 21 goals and provided three assists in 36 games in all competitions, helping Al Qadsiah finish fourth in the Saudi Pro League and reach the final of the Copa del Rey.
However, Aubameyang did not feel comfortable with life in the Middle East. He asked Al Qadsiah to terminate his contract early despite having 12 months left on his contract. The Saudi Pro League club quickly agreed to this proposal.
Returning to Marseille, Aubameyang hopes to replicate his impressive form from the 2023/24 season, when he contributed 30 goals and 11 assists in 51 matches for the French port city club. The former Arsenal star's return to Marseille will be an opportunity for him to find inspiration to play football in Europe, and is expected to help coach Roberto De Zerbi solve many problems in attack.
“Aubameyang brings experience, quality and fighting spirit. We are very happy to have him back,” De Zerbi told Canal+ .
