While digging a fish pond, when they discovered a strange object shaped like a wooden boat deep underground, the locals kept the scene intact and reported it to the authorities. According to archeological experts, the location where the ancient boat appeared is on the Dau River, a branch of the Thien Duc River - Duong River, flowing close to the western bank of Luy Lau Citadel.
Within the excavation area of about 300 square meters, two boats lie about 2 meters apart. One is about 15 meters long and 2.2 meters wide; the other is 14 meters long and about 1.6 meters wide. Although located deep underground, the boats are still in fairly intact shape.
According to initial assessment, these may be two cargo boats on the Dau River, fixedly connected together by a wooden bar at the bow. Currently, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Bac Ninh province and the Institute of Archaeology under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences continue to excavate and research to determine the age and study relocation options after the excavation is completed.
