AI is just a support tool
The workshop on artificial intelligence (AI) and strategic solutions for smart healthcare systems was held by the Ministry of Health on the afternoon of November 17.

Among the units applying AI, Bach Mai Hospital is where many lung cancer cases are accurately diagnosed with the support of AI. Also at this hospital, electronic medical records help save about 100 billion VND/year by cutting down the cost of printing films of diagnostic imaging results.
However, Dr. Nguyen Ngo Quang, Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Training (Ministry of Health) affirmed that AI does not replace doctors, but is only a support tool, so the Ministry of Health is perfecting regulations on principles of development, classification, testing, management and quality monitoring of AI in medicine, ensuring that only qualified AI systems are deployed in practice.
At the same time, complete the development of ethical guidelines for the use of AI. When applying, medical facilities and individuals need to adhere to the principle that "AI only plays a supporting role for doctors and cannot completely replace clinical decisions". All final treatment decisions must be supervised and confirmed by doctors, and doctors must be responsible for the professional and rights of patients.
Remote doctor
At the workshop, the representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Vietnam also shared about the "Doctor for every family" model built by FPT, with funding from UNDP.
With this system, after 5 years of implementation, by October 31, 2025, 1.9 million citizen accounts in provinces and cities have been activated; 73,556 people have booked 119,118 remote medical examination and treatment appointments; 15,683 video calls to support remote medical examination and treatment... and UNDP will support the continued expansion of this system.
People install the "Doctor for every home" software for free on their smartphones. The software supports the establishment of an online interaction channel between patients and doctors to schedule appointments and consult on remote health care; examine and care for chronic patients...
According to the Ministry of Health, remote medical examination and treatment services are paid for by the health insurance fund, and agencies are developing a price framework to help patients at the grassroots level, especially those with serious illnesses, to have more convenience in receiving consultation and treatment from doctors at higher levels.
