On the morning of April 22, Dr. Tran Chi Cuong, Director of Can Tho Cardiovascular and Stroke Hospital (SIS Can Tho), issued a warning about the truth about "the role of milk in treating diabetes" that is being widely advertised on social networks.
Recently, many patients being treated at S.IS Can Tho have been victims of this unverified advertising. The most recent case that is fortunately not in critical condition is Ms. A. (from the Western region), who has been diagnosed and treated for diabetes for over 2 years and is doing very well at SIS Can Tho.
Ms. A's blood sugar increased suddenly after drinking milk for a few months, surprising the doctors.
From a blood sugar level of over 200mg% HbA1C 11 down to about 100mg%, HbA1C returned to normal at 6 (like a person without diabetes), Ms. A. was doing well with a very simple maintenance dose of medication. However, after a few months of re-examination, looking at the blood test results, the doctor was startled by the "peak" sugar level of 300mg%, HbA1C 13.
Trying to find out the cause of the sudden increase in blood sugar, I found out that in the past few months, Ms. A. listened to online advertisements and bought "blood sugar stabilizing milk" to drink every day. "It's heartbreaking to see her, but fortunately it's not life-threatening," Dr. Cuong shared.
According to Dr. Cuong, recently many doctors have warned about harmful, unverified, unscientific information spreading on social networks and the internet, causing many serious consequences for many patients.
