A Brazilian court sentenced Joao Teixeira de Faria, a self-proclaimed healer, to 118 years in prison for raping a believer.
Judge Marcos Boechat of the Criminal Court of Goias state on September 15 sentenced Joao Teixeira de Faria to 118 years, 6 months and 15 days in prison for rape, rape fraud and rape of a vulnerable person.
The sentence is the same for 17 cases involving Faria, including some criminal cases that had already been decided by the court. Judge Marcos Boechat also ordered Joao Teixeira de Faria to pay 100,000 reais (about $20,500) in compensation to the victims.
Joao Teixeira de Faria, 81, is known as "Joao de Deus" or "John - the man of God". He claims to have the ability to heal the soul.
Since 1976, Faria has been performing healing rituals and "spiritual surgery" on tens of thousands of people each month through his center in the town of Abadiania in central Brazil, 100 km from the capital Brasilia.

Faria's fame spread in the US after appearing on an American television show hosted by Oprah Winfrey in 2012, introducing spiritual healing methods.
However, more than 600 women have accused him of raping them in the name of “healing”. The rape scams date back to 1973. Faria was arrested in 2018 but denied all charges at the time.
A court in Abadiania accepted the complaint from four of Faria’s victims in January 2019 and allowed an investigation to begin. Faria has been under house arrest for the past few years.
On the center's website, Faria boasts that he has treated former Brazilian presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Dilma Rousseff, Michel Temer, even former US president Bill Clinton, and many pop stars and people in the entertainment industry.
Hundreds of thousands of visitors come here every year, including some celebrities. Attendance at the ceremonies is free, but De Faria often prescribes “medicines” that are sold in his center. Some who have visited Abadiania describe Faria as a very powerful person in the local area.
