Here, doctors reveal how you should sleep to get glowing skin, according to the Indian Express.

When it comes to skin care, people often think of lotions and elaborate skin care routines to maintain clear, glowing skin. However, one important aspect that is often overlooked is the impact of sleeping position on the skin. The position you sleep in each night can have a huge impact on the health and appearance of your skin.

Although many people prefer to sleep on their side, this sleeping position can have its own disadvantages for the skin.

Recently, Dr. Aanchal Panth, a dermatologist at Dermafollix Skin and Hair Transplant Clinic (India), took to Instagram to share good and bad sleeping positions for the skin.

Sleeping on your side is bad for your skin.

Although many people prefer sleeping on their side, it also comes with its own disadvantages for the skin.

Dr Gitika Sanodia Biyani, dermatologist and cosmetic specialist at Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital, Powai, Mumbai (India), explains that pressing your cheek against the pillow can lead to the formation of wrinkles while sleeping. The pressure of sleeping on your side can also break down collagen, the protein that keeps your skin firm and elastic, leading to premature aging, according to the Indian Express.

To remedy this, Dr. Biyani recommends using a silk or satin pillowcase to create less friction and reduce the risk of waking up with wrinkles.

Sleeping on your stomach is the worst for your skin.

When you bury your face in your pillow, the pressure and friction over a long period of time can lead to wrinkles, explains Dr Monica Bambroo, head of the department of dermatology and cosmetic surgery at Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon, India. Furthermore, sleeping on your stomach can contribute to puffy eyes, as fluid can accumulate in this position.

Sleeping on your back is ideal for your skin.

Sleeping on your back is considered by dermatologists to be the ideal position to protect skin health.

Sleeping on your back is hailed by dermatologists as the ideal position for protecting your skin’s health. Sreelekha Challagundla, a dermatologist based in India, says that when you sleep on your back, your face has the least amount of contact with the pillow. This reduces the risk of lines and wrinkles that can develop over time due to friction and pressure on the skin when sleeping in other positions. Sleeping on your back also helps prevent the buildup of oil and dirt on your face, contributing to brighter skin.

Dr Bambroo explains that sleeping on your back also promotes blood circulation, helping nutrients and oxygen reach the skin more effectively, thereby supporting collagen production and ultimately beautifying the skin, according to the Indian Express.

Dermatologists suggest that for glowing skin, elevate your upper body by propping it up with an extra pillow. This position can help prevent water retention in the face, reducing puffiness in the morning, says Dr. Biyani. It also helps improve lymphatic drainage, which results in brighter skin.
