Career guidance and vocational training in Binh Phuoc

Thanks to the promotion of communication and innovation in career counseling, social awareness has fundamentally changed, especially in the period of arranging and streamlining the administrative apparatus, the mentality of "respecting universities and neglecting vocational education" has been gradually eliminated. However, along with the psychology of age, for remote areas - where vocational education facilities and industrial zones have not yet developed - this is really a difficult problem to implement the Prime Minister's streaming targets.

Lesson 2:
MANY DIFFICULTIES AND PROBLEMS

Choose the right direction

Binh Thang Secondary School is a school in a remote area of Bu Gia Map district and Binh Phuoc province. Thanks to the promotion of career counseling as well as solutions to improve the qualityof education , most students want to take the high school entrance exam, especially to enter specialized and high-quality schools in the province to continue their dream of becoming university students.

Student Luong Thi Thanh, class 9A4 , Binh Thang Secondary School shared: Through career guidance from teachers, family as well as information, after graduating from secondary school, I will take the entrance exam to study in high school. After that, if I and my family have enough conditions, I will fulfill my dream of entering the police force. Why did I not take the entrance exam to vocational school but choose this direction? Thanh said, because according to her research, vocational schools do not train police officers, while her dream is to become a police officer.

According to Luong Thi Thanh, depending on each student’s ability, strengths and family circumstances, they will choose two different paths. If their academic performance is good and their family has the means, they should go to high school or university to improve their qualifications and realize their dreams. On the contrary, those who do not have the ability to study and have difficult economic circumstances can choose to learn a trade early to have a job to help their family.

Also through research and consultation, Hoang Van Thang, class 9B, Binh Thang Secondary School decided to take the entrance exam to grade 10 of high school. Because according to Thang, at this age, if you try to practice and study at high school, it will be a good foundation for the journey to conquer the future, while vocational training does not provide enough knowledge and qualifications to absorb and also depends on many different factors. That is, studying a profession far from home, you have to be independent from an early age, lack of parental supervision, so it is easy to be tempted and fall.

With many years of working in career guidance for 8th and 9th graders, Ms. Phan Thi Nong, a teacher at Binh Thang Secondary School, said: The school has a very good subject, which is career guidance experience activities. Therefore, not only the homeroom teacher but also the subject teachers and the Board of Directors can orient the students to their favorite careers. However, the majority of students here are from rural families, far from urban areas, with little access to 4.0 technology, so it is difficult to determine a career after graduating from secondary school. Along with that, there are no vocational schools or vocational training centers here, so finding a place to train in a profession suitable for students is really a difficult problem.

Vice Principal of Binh Thang Secondary School, Tran Thi Hong, shared: Right from the beginning of each school year, the school has thoroughly instructed teachers and staff to combine learning activities with career education, orienting the students to stream according to their abilities. Career guidance and streaming work has received high consensus from teachers, students and parents. In particular, the spirit and learning capacity of students of Binh Thang Secondary School are very good, so the streaming work has been highly effective with the number of students passing the entrance exams to specialized schools in the province tending to increase and the majority of them passing the entrance exams to high schools with increasing numbers. Only a few students with poor academic performance or economic difficulties go to study freelance jobs such as hairdressing, spa, car repair... in other areas or locally.

With more than 20 years of experience in career guidance and student orientation, Mr. Nguyen Duc Tien, Principal of Loc Thai Secondary School, Loc Ninh District, said: Every year, the Board of Directors and teachers coordinate with vocational schools in the province to provide career counseling so that students can make the right choice after graduating from secondary school. However, it is only counseling and cannot force students, due to their young age and parents' prejudices about vocational schools. A few want to participate in vocational training but are afraid of going far away, so they study free trades in the area.

The profession has not met the reality

Not only in remote areas but also in secondary schools in the central area of Dong Xoai City, although career guidance and orientation work are well implemented and there are many vocational schools for students to choose to study after graduating from secondary school. However, most of them still choose to study in high school, because it is suitable for their age psychology.

Principal of Tan Phu Secondary School (Dong Xoai City) Nguyen Viet Tuyen said: In recent years, the school has done a very good job of streamlining through integrating subjects with career guidance programs in grades 8 and 9, and at the same time inviting vocational schools to provide career guidance for students. However, the reality shows that the number of students going to vocational school is not much, due to the mentality of parents wanting their children to finish high school before going to vocational school, because each family only has 1-2 children. In my opinion, this is also a good trend, because after students finish grade 12, the training of high-quality labor will be higher than in grade 9.

The school's goal is to improve the quality of education and training so that students have knowledge and will later become human resources for the country. The school tries its best to innovate assessment methods and lively activities to attract students and orient them so that if they want to have a good future, they must have solid knowledge. In fact, in the school, about 50/500 students after junior high school choose to study a trade, accounting for 10-15%, due to difficult economic circumstances and poor academic performance.

In addition to the psychology and prejudice of parents and students, vocational training in Binh Phuoc is still a difficult problem, because the teaching staff, facilities, equipment, and occupations at vocational schools are not rich and diverse, and do not meet the actual needs for learning and training high-quality labor resources today. From that reality, the Central and Government have made appropriate adjustments to the current vocational training age frame.

Head of the Department of Education and Training of Dong Xoai City, Ngo Van Quyen, said: Career education and student orientation in the city have implemented many synchronous solutions and achieved some positive results. However, there are still many difficulties and shortcomings. In addition to facilities and equipment, schools do not have separate staff and specialized training for this work but have part-time jobs. Despite coordinating with units for career counseling and orientation, parents still want their children to study at high school. Along with that, Dong Xoai area, although vocational education facilities are more developed than other places, is still limited in terms of occupations or occupations are not rich, unable to meet the actual needs of social development. In particular, after graduation, information about jobs and income is still a difficult problem, so it cannot satisfy parents and students. Besides, the age after graduating from junior high school is still young, so after grasping information when entering vocational training for a while, many students drop out of school, this number is higher for students graduating from high school and then going to vocational training.
