In November, an Instagram post announced that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, would start reading users' direct messages after updating its privacy policy on December 16.
“Every conversation. Every image. Every voice message. It’s all being used to feed AI,” the post read, which also circulated on Threads.
Through verification, experts from Snopes confirmed on November 11 that Meta plans to update its privacy policy on December 16, 2025.
This update, however, is unrelated to direct messages and doesn't change how Meta handles them.
Instead, the update will focus on how Meta uses data collected from conversations between users and Meta AI, the company's generative AI application.
“The update mentioned in the rumor circulating has nothing to do with direct messages, but rather how we will use user interactions with our AI features to further personalize their experience,” a Meta spokesperson said.
The spokesperson confirmed that Meta does not use the content of private messages between users and family and friends to train AI without permission.
On October 1, Meta revealed plans to update its privacy policy on December 16. According to a press release, the upcoming change to the company's privacy policy is that Meta will begin using people's interactions with the company's generative AI features to personalize content and ad recommendations.
Additionally, according to Meta's privacy policy, Meta cannot read end-to-end encrypted messages. However, not all messaging systems on Meta's platforms are encrypted.
While conversations on Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp are encrypted, conversations in Facebook group chats, chats with businesses, and Marketplace are not. According to Meta's policies, the company has the right to collect this data.
