End of an era
After more than a decade of widespread presence on the Internet, Facebook's Like and Comment plugins will officially be retired on February 10, 2026. This decision by Meta marks the end of an era of the social web, where these two icons once served as an important bridge between independent websites and the largest social network on the planet.
Launched in 2010, Like and Comment buttons quickly became popular tools for users to interact with content outside of Facebook. From personal blogs to news articles to e-commerce products, they were everywhere, turning each click into a measure of influence and social signals, helping content go viral.

However, according to Meta, the role of these two plugins has faded over time. "These plugins reflect an older era of web development. Their use has declined sharply over time," Meta shared in the official announcement, emphasizing that this is a natural step, reflecting the change in the digital environment.
The move also signals a shift in Meta’s strategic direction. The company is no longer focusing entirely on Facebook, but is shifting to new products like Threads, Instagram, and projects around AI, virtual reality, and the metaverse.
No disruption, no impact on functionality
Meta reassures website administrators that the plugin's demise will not cause any technical disruption. On February 10, 2026, the Like and Comment buttons will automatically disappear as invisible elements (pixel 0x0), disappearing completely without leaving any gaps or display errors.
This is a gentle approach that ensures a smooth end-of-support process. Developers can proactively remove the plugin embed code at any time before that date, but this is not mandatory. Meta is also committed to maintaining technical support channels during the transition.
While they don't affect the core functionality of the site, the disappearance of these two plugins still leaves a symbolic void, ending an era in which they were a familiar bridge between independent websites and the most popular social network on the planet.
The removal of the two plugins is more than just a feature removal. It’s a clear signal that Meta is leaving the past behind and opening a new chapter, gradually building a platform more suited to the modern digital world , no longer relying on the icons that once made Facebook famous.
