Worrying about choosing subjects, exams and university admissions in 2025

(NLDO) - Representatives of the Department of Education and Training, high schools, and universities expressed concerns about choosing subjects, exam subjects, and university admissions in 2025.


On the afternoon of November 15, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade held a seminar on enrollment orientation for 2025 with the participation of representatives from the Department of Education and Training (DOET), high schools, and universities in Ho Chi Minh City.

At the workshop, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hoan, Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, said that in 2025, university admissions will have many changes when the high school graduation exam is organized according to the 2018 general education program.

In previous years, schools often used about 3-4 methods, but in 2025, there will likely be more methods, for example, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade will add a specialized capacity assessment method chaired by Ho Chi Minh City University of Education. With this method, candidates only need to take 1 subject (the main subject in the group of majors/majors), the remaining 2 subjects can be considered from the high school graduation exam or from the high school transcript. Candidates can also take more than 1 subject to have more opportunities to be considered for admission to many different majors.

Mr. Pham Phuong Binh, Deputy Head of the Department of Continuing Education - Vocational and University (Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training), said that students entering grade 10 have been oriented to choose subjects to facilitate university admission later. However, to be more effective, it is necessary to have the cooperation of universities to make the subject orientation more effective. In addition, career guidance and career selection work also needs to be done better to suit the students' abilities, avoiding the situation where students have to drop out halfway to choose a career again.

Mr. Tran Cong Tuan, Principal of Phu Nhuan High School (HCMC), said that it is necessary to improve the professional capacity of teachers doing career guidance work in high schools to orient students in the right career. It is necessary to coordinate with universities and businesses so that students have a clear understanding of the career they want to do and the major they want to study.

Dr. Nguyen Van Kha, Deputy Director of the Admissions and Communications Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, said that the 2024 admissions results were quite successful in terms of targets, with successful candidates coming from 62/63 provinces and cities. To achieve that result, the school carried out communications in the press, directly approached high school students, and promoted communications on digital platforms...

Mr. Kha assessed that there is currently no good coordination between universities and high schools in career guidance and enrollment, so there is a situation where students are "overwhelmed" with career guidance and enrollment information because there are too many organizations as well as the accuracy of the content.

Regarding the 2025 admissions, the school plans to use 5 methods: direct admission according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and according to the school's own project, considering academic records, considering high school graduation exam scores, considering the results of the competency assessment exam organized by Ho Chi Minh City National University and considering the results of the specialized competency assessment exam jointly organized by Ho Chi Minh City University of Education and Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade. In 2025, the school will use the entire K01 block and add subjects from block C to the admissions process.

Representative of Can Tho Department of Education and Training gave his opinion

Discussing the orientation of university admission in 2025, Mr. Huynh Thanh Loc, Head of Secondary Education Department of Can Tho Department of Education and Training, said that the most difficult thing for students entering grade 10 is choosing subjects. When implementing the general education program in 2018, many students were disadvantaged because they could not choose their favorite subjects because schools could not open classes because not many students chose them.

Currently, 12th grade students choose to study 3 natural science subjects, accounting for about 40%, but when surveyed about graduation exam subjects, 30% of them choose social science subjects. Representatives of the Can Tho Department of Education and Training are also concerned that for university admissions in 2025, there is still no information from the Ministry of Education and Training and universities to let students know that the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year is almost over.

MSc. Nguyen Ngoc Trung, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, shared that there are many students with outstanding abilities in subjects. The specialized ability assessment exam designed by the school aims to exploit the strengths of students. "Perhaps universities do not need to organize many separate exams but should coordinate with each other to use the exam results," said Mr. Trung, adding that the high school graduation exam only has a few subjects, so the specialized ability assessment exam also increases the chance of admission. A representative of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education said that the admission rate from this exam will increase every year.
