After being introduced by the late CEO Steve Jobs in January 2007, the first generation iPhone officially hit shelves on June 29 of the same year. ABC News ' documentary video shows users flocking to Apple stores on the day the first iPhone was released, creating a memorable moment for a device that completely changed Apple and the mobile industry.

“This has never happened in my memory. Covering technology for over 20 years, this is the first time I’ve seen a product get this much of a response,” Levy told ABC News ’ John Berman.

Likewise, Berman credits Apple’s advertising campaign for convincing people that the iPhone was truly important and groundbreaking. “Buy the iPhone. Buy the iPhone,” Berman exclaimed.

“Apple has historically resonated with the tech community,” Levy responded. One female reporter even emphasized that Steve Jobs was a “master marketer” in creating a loyal community of Mac users, including newbies and even high-end tech enthusiasts.

Speaking to Berman, Jessica, a customer at the New York Apple Store on the day the iPhone was released, continued to praise Steve Jobs. “He always came up with something innovative before anyone else thought of it,” she said. She emphasized that all of Jobs’ ideas were “top notch,” although the reporter had to remind him that he had failed with the Apple Lisa computer in 1983.

The video ends with the Apple Store opening its doors and the first customers walking in to pick up their new iPhones. Jessica, in particular, bought two for herself and her sister, holding more than $1,000 in cash to pay for them. “It feels like I just won an Olympic gold medal,” she says.

The first generation iPhone had a 3.5-inch screen, 2 MP camera, priced at $499 (4 GB internal memory) and $599 (8 GB internal memory). This is one of Apple's most successful devices, bringing in about $1.5 trillion in revenue over the years. After many different versions, Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 17 later this year.
