French police clashed with a group of extremist fans. |
In the early morning of June 1, PSG's Parc des Princes stadium became a fan zone to watch the match on TV in Munich. An estimated 48,000 people came to the stadium to watch on a big screen.
Le Parisien reported that police armed with batons confronted the crowd near the area where PSG fans had gathered. Riots broke out, leading to several fires breaking out near the stadium in the French capital, forcing firefighters to be dispatched to several locations to put out the blazes.
Police arrested at least 81 people in connection with the incidents. French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said on social media: “True PSG fans are excited by the team’s great performance. Meanwhile, some barbarians take to the streets of Paris to commit crimes and provoke law enforcement.”
“I demand a strong response from the security forces to these acts of violence. It is unacceptable that we cannot celebrate without fear of the barbarity of a small group of thugs who do not respect anything,” Retailleau stressed.
French officials said some 5,400 police were deployed across the city to control post-match celebrations. Police on the Champs-Élysées used tear gas and pepper spray to maintain order.
A police spokesman said a car was set on fire near the Parc des Princes, and dozens of people were arrested shortly after the match ended.
