Protecting sea and island sovereignty in the new era

In response to the need to manage and protect the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland, on October 26, 1975, the Ministry of National Defense decided to establish four coastal regions (now the Commands of Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 of the Navy). The establishment of the Navy regions marked the strong development of the Vietnam People's Navy.

To meet mission requirements, in 1978 the Ministry of National Defense decided to adjust five coastal regions and Cam Ranh base into four naval regions, and at the same time dissolved coastal Region 2 (later, to meet mission requirements for managing and protecting the southeast sea area and southern continental shelf of the Fatherland, in 2009, the Ministry of National Defense decided to establish Naval Region 2).

50 years of construction and development, from the early days of hardship and deprivation, generations of officers and soldiers of the Naval Regions have steadfastly held on to the islands, ships, radar stations, platforms, etc., forming a solid defensive belt, the "steel shields" protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.

In the context of the East Sea situation posing challenges, the Naval Regions are assigned the special responsibility of "both firmly protecting national sovereignty and maintaining a peaceful and stable environment to serve the sustainable development of the marine economy", each Navy officer and soldier must promote tradition and firmly protect the sovereignty of the sea and islands in the new era.

Naval Region 1 was born from predecessor units, bravely fought and contributed to the victory of the first battle of the Vietnam People's Navy and the army and people of the North on August 2 and 5, 1964, chasing away the Madoc destroyer, shooting down many planes and capturing American pilots right in the northern sea. Proud to carry out their duties in the unit that won the first battle, officers and soldiers of Naval Region 1 today master technical equipment, practice realistic training, and are highly combat ready.

Rear Admiral Tran Xuan Van, Political Commissar of Naval Region 1, said: Managing the vast sea area from Quang Ninh to Ha Tinh, over the past 50 years, Naval Region 1 has successfully completed many tasks; preventing, combating, overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, rescuing, especially in remote sea areas; officers and soldiers of Naval Region 1 not only protect themselves but also protect the safety of property and lives of people from natural disasters and epidemics, contributing to portraying and deepening the image of "Uncle Ho's soldiers - Navy soldiers" in the hearts of the people.

Rear Admiral Tran Xuan Van further affirmed: After 50 years of journey to protect the sea, Naval Region 1 has continuously grown to become the core force in protecting the sovereignty of the northern sea and islands of the Fatherland. To have that mettle, will and strength, one of the core factors is the glorious tradition and patriotism, the indomitable will and pride in the sea and islands of the Navy Region 1 officers and soldiers, which have been forged through half a century of fighting, training and maturing. Absolutely loyal to the Party, the Fatherland and the people, unwavering in the face of all difficulties and challenges, ready to receive and excellently complete all assigned tasks.

Managing and protecting the sea area of ​​more than 360,000km2 from Cu Lao Xanh, Binh Dinh (now Gia Lai) to Mui Ba Kiem, Binh Thuan (now Lam Dong), including Truong Sa archipelago with many units stationed on islands and high mountains.

Over half a century of building, fighting and growing, Naval Region 4 has changed its organization, force and equipment many times to suit the requirements of each period. Each period marks the feats, achievements and selfless sacrifices of generations of officers and soldiers, making an important contribution to the cause of protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.

That is the lesson of maintaining political courage, absolute loyalty to the Fatherland, the Party and the people, steadfast in the will "as long as there are people, there will be islands". In particular, the spirit of solidarity, self-reliance, self-strengthening and steadfast will have been and are a great source of strength to help Naval Region 4 overcome all difficulties, successfully completing the mission of firmly protecting the sovereignty of the sacred sea and islands of the Fatherland in the new era.

On the islands, on duty ships, and at radar stations, each officer and soldier clearly identified “Truong Sa is the Fatherland” and protecting Truong Sa is protecting the Fatherland. In all weather conditions and circumstances, the spirit of combat readiness is always at the highest level. The soldiers steadfastly stick to the islands and ships, day and night guarding sovereignty and overcoming all hardships and dangers to firmly protect every inch of the sacred island and sea of ​​the Fatherland.

The Naval Region 5 Command is assigned to manage the Southwestern sea and islands from the Ganh Hao estuary, Ca Mau province to Ha Tien, An Giang province with more than 150 large and small islands, bordering the waters of Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia. This is a sea area of ​​special importance in terms of economy, politics, national defense and security; and is also a traditional fishing area for fishermen. Half a century of building, fighting and growing, Naval Region 5 has always been a solid support in the Southwestern sea and islands of the Fatherland.

In the era of digital transformation and military modernization, soldiers of Naval Region 5 always maintain their bravery and intelligence, apply digital transformation, master modern weapons and vehicles, and are ready to fight to protect the sovereignty of the sacred sea and islands.

Rear Admiral Trinh Xuan Tung, Commander of Naval Region 5, affirmed that, in response to the requirements of Navy modernization and the trend of digital transformation in the military, Region 5 proactively applies digital technology in training, command, and operations.

Simulation models and electronic sand tables are widely used, helping officers and soldiers practice their operational skills, handle realistic situations, save time and costs and improve training efficiency, thereby continuously improving the overall quality, level and combat readiness of the unit, meeting mission requirements in all situations, worthy of being the core force to firmly protect the sovereignty of the sea and islands in the Southwest of the Fatherland.

According to Rear Admiral Nguyen Dang Tien, Political Commissar of Naval Region 3: In the context of complicated and unpredictable developments in the world and the region, especially in the East Sea, especially the waters of the assigned management area, there are many potential risks of disputes, conflicts, and local collisions.

The task of protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands is posing new and increasingly higher requirements. Improving the leadership capacity and fighting strength of the Party is a key and decisive factor. In particular, the requirements for the leadership capacity and fighting strength of Party organizations must be raised to a new level.

Building a revolutionary, disciplined, elite, and modern Region is the foundation for the Region to excellently fulfill its assigned tasks, worthy of being the core in firmly protecting the sacred sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.

The Party Committee and Command of Naval Region 3 have determined to promote comprehensive strength, build a clean and strong Party organization, and a revolutionary, disciplined, elite and modern region.

Building a politically strong Region; cadres and soldiers with steadfast political will, absolutely loyal to the Party, the Fatherland and the people, ready to fight and sacrifice to protect the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.
