On April 28, Hue Central Hospital held a discharge ceremony for a 29-month-old patient with thalassemia thanks to an allogeneic bone marrow transplant.
Patient DQT (29 months old, from Quang Ninh ) was diagnosed with thalassemia when he was only 7 months old.
During this time, she had to undergo 12 blood transfusions to stay alive. After conducting an HLA test, she was fortunate to be a perfect match with her 10-year-old sister, creating favorable conditions for a bone marrow transplant to take place on April 4, 2025.
Results: Platelets recovered on day 23 and granulocytes recovered on day 16 after transplantation.
This is a very positive signal, opening up opportunities for DQT children to develop like other healthy children, no longer dependent on regular blood transfusions and iron-chelating drugs.
This is also the 7th successful allogeneic bone marrow transplant performed at the hospital.
On the same day, baby Đ.PN (32 months old, from Lam Dong ) - a patient with high-risk neuroblastoma - was also discharged from the hospital after an autologous stem cell transplant.
After 9 months of fighting the disease, the baby received a stem cell transplant at Hue Central Hospital, with platelet and granulocyte recovery recorded on the 30th day after transplant.
Professor Pham Nhu Hiep, director of Hue Central Hospital, said that the successful allogeneic bone marrow transplant for a child with thalassemia for the seventh time was a major step forward, not only helping the child escape from a life dependent on blood transfusions and iron-chelating drugs, but also creating a premise for the treatment of many other diseases such as bone marrow failure, congenital immunodeficiency and recurrent cancer.
It is known that congenital hemolytic anemia is a genetic disease that causes chronic anemia, seriously affecting the health and development of children.
In severe cases, allogeneic bone marrow transplantation is considered the only way for children to fully recover and live a healthy life without having to depend on regular blood transfusions.
