According to information from the Central Dermatology Hospital on July 20, the hospital received a case of severe atopic dermatitis in an 8-month-old baby due to bathing with leaves and incorrect treatment. The patient was admitted to the hospital in a state of severe damage, with red patches, dry skin, spreading to the limbs and body with thick scales, crusts, and cracked skin on the head.

Taking her child to the hospital, the patient's mother said that since the age of 1 month, the child had red spots, papules, and blisters on both cheeks and body. The patient's mother had taken her child to the Central Dermatology Hospital and was diagnosed with atopic dermatitis. She used topical medications and moisturizers, and the lesions improved.

However, when the baby was discharged from the hospital, he was not regularly moisturized, causing the injuries to gradually worsen. The family took the baby to many places for examination, at a private hospital in Cambodia, and some hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, which reduced the injuries. When he returned home, the family arbitrarily bathed the baby with many different types of leaves to treat the illness.

At the hospital, the child was diagnosed with severe atopic dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis. After 4 days of treatment at the Department of Women's and Children's Dermatology, the lesions were dry, not oozing fluid, and the thick scales on the scalp had peeled off.

MSc. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thao Nhi, Department of Treatment of Skin Diseases of Women and Children, said that atopic dermatitis, also known as atopic eczema, is a chronic, recurrent skin disease, mainly found in children and related to allergic diathesis.

Doctor Thao Nhi said that normally the skin has a protective layer that helps prevent water from evaporating and protects the skin from external pathogens. However, in people with atopic dermatitis, the protective layer is damaged, the skin becomes dry and dehydrated, allowing external bacteria to penetrate and cause red rashes and itchy blisters to appear on the skin.

Seborrheic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis are two diseases that can co-occur in children, usually not life-threatening, but if not treated and cared for properly, they can lead to dangerous complications for children. Complications can include: Bacterial superinfection, impetigo; viral infections such as eczema herpeticum, eczema Coxsackie; scarring affecting aesthetics; severe itching affecting the patient's quality of life.

Doctors recommend that when diagnosed with atopic dermatitis or seborrheic dermatitis, topical medication and skin care are very important. In addition, it is absolutely not recommended to use folk methods such as bathing with leaves or applying tobacco to children, as this can easily cause negative effects as in the above case.
