Just days after David Beckham and Gary Neville officially completed their takeover of Salford City, the club released 17 players from their first-team squad.

Beckham wants to change the Salford squad.

This move clearly shows the determination of the legendary Manchester United duo to reform as they begin a new era at the club they invested in since 2014.

Neville, along with former teammates Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes, bought Salford a decade ago. However, the “Class of ’92” group has since withdrawn from ownership, leaving Neville and Beckham – the only two remaining members of the club to remain involved in the ambitious football project.

Last season, Salford disappointed when they only finished 8th in League Two, thereby missing out on a ticket to the promotion play-off round. Immediately, Beckham did not hesitate to carry out a "major surgery" on the force.

Among the 17 players leaving, there are many experienced names who played important roles in the squad, typically Conor McAleny, Liam Shephard and Ryan Watson.

One of those who stayed was Matthew Lund – a veteran midfielder who has made over 120 appearances for Salford since 2021. He has not only played for the club but has also taken on a coaching role since October last year.

Salford have also extended the contracts of several key players, including Ossama Ashley, who was recently voted the fans’ Player of the Year. The midfielder came through the academies of Fulham, Wimbledon and West Ham before finding his feet at Salford. Former Portsmouth defender Haji Mnoga and Everton academy graduate Luke Garbutt have also been retained for next season.
