Inside the 15-inch MacBook Air

Apple's latest MacBook Air model has an internal design that is no different from the 13-inch version, except for the speaker system and larger battery.

iFixit, a service specializing in guiding users to repair their own electronic devices, states that disassembling the 15-inch MacBook Air is similar to the 13-inch (2022) model, from the arrangement of screws to the clamps used. The internal hardware is also the same as the previous version, but it has a better speaker system thanks to the larger size and more space available.

Previously, when announcing the 15-inch version at the WWDC 2023 event in early June, Apple stated that the device has a 6-speaker sound system, two more than the 13-inch version, providing twice the bass. The device also supports Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos.

Despite having larger batteries, the battery life of both models is comparable. The drawback of the new product is that it is very difficult to repair. iFixit rated the 15-inch MacBook Air 3 out of 10 on its repairability scale due to its complex structure and the way the components are stacked like a "maze," making removing the battery and motherboard quite challenging. Even the battery of the 13-inch version is easier to remove than the 15-inch version thanks to the battery cells being secured with adhesive tape.

The 15-inch MacBook Air has a quad-cell 66.5 Wh battery, supposedly designed for efficient fast charging as all four charge simultaneously. Additionally, the 256GB version only has a single NAND memory chip, resulting in lower read and write speeds compared to the 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB models. RAM and internal storage are also not upgradeable.

The advantage of the 15-inch MacBook Air is its larger screen and trackpad compared to the 13-inch version, while the performance of both is comparable as they both use the M2 chip.
