Patient NVT (48 years old, residing in Vinh Long province) was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of dull pain in the left hypochondrium, mild fullness and prolonged fatigue. The results of the diagnostic imaging showed a cystic tumor measuring 6x6 cm, occupying nearly two-thirds of the spleen volume. After an interdisciplinary consultation, the doctors agreed to perform a laparoscopic splenectomy.

The medical team is performing endoscopic surgery.
The surgery was performed by the hospital's General Surgery team, including Dr. Nguyen Thi Bich Chi - Deputy Head of the Department and Master, Dr. Tran Nhat Phi. The doctors released the splenic ligament, separated the cyst, controlled the vascular pedicle and removed the entire spleen through the extended trocar. The entire process took about 2 hours, was safe, had almost no blood loss and no complications.
After surgery, the patient recovered quickly, his vital signs were stable, he could move lightly and eat again after 24 hours. Mr. T was discharged after 3 days in good health. “I feel very secure when being treated at Vinh Long General Hospital. The surgery was easy, I recovered faster than expected,” Mr. T shared.
According to doctors, splenic cysts are a rare disease, accounting for less than 1% of splenic lesions, usually only discovered incidentally through ultrasound or CT. When the tumor grows large, the patient may be at risk of compression, rupture or infection, at which point splenectomy is necessary.
The success of the surgery not only demonstrates the professional capacity and investment in modern equipment of Vinh Long General Hospital but also expands access to advanced and safe surgical techniques for local people.
