Central Lung Hospital successfully performed two lung transplants in one night for the first time

At the meeting, Meritorious Doctor Dinh Van Luong, Director of the Central Lung Hospital, informed that in one day, the Central Lung Hospital coordinated with experts and hospitals: National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, Hospital E, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital - National University, Central Military Hospital 108, Cho Ray Hospital, Ba Ria General Hospital... to successfully perform 2 lung transplants for 2 patients.

This is the first time in Vietnam that two lung transplants have been successfully performed in one day. Performing two lung transplants simultaneously requires the mobilization of all resources and extremely close coordination between the Central Lung Hospital and units nationwide.

All lung transplants performed by the Central Lung Hospital were successful at the highest level according to the standards of the UCSF Lung Transplant Center - University of California, San Francisco, the most prestigious Medical Center in the United States. The success of these two transplants has increased the total number of successful lung transplants of the Hospital to 9, putting Vietnam on the list of major lung transplant centers in the world .

This event contributes to the achievements of organ transplantation in Vietnam, is a breakthrough in the country's medicine, affirming the synchronous capacity of the Central Lung Hospital and leading hospitals in the country. In particular, the coordination between leading experts in lung transplantation and the creative application in using existing facilities effectively has marked a remarkable step forward in the mission of establishing a Regional Lung Transplant Center at the Hospital.

Case 1 (emergency lung transplant): A female patient (48 years old, Hanoi ) received a lung organ from a male soldier (55 years old) who donated organs at the 108 Military Central Hospital. The surgery lasted more than 6 hours, starting at 4:15 p.m. on November 9. Notably, the medical team at the Central Lung Hospital had to urgently fly from Can Tho to Hanoi to perform the transplant in the "golden time". The patient is currently receiving post-operative care at the Lung Transplant Center. 24 hours after the lung transplant, the patient had the endotracheal tube removed and was breathing on her own with the new lung.

Second case (cross-Vietnam lung transplant): A male patient (48 years old, Hai Phong) received a lung organ from a male patient (32 years old) who donated the organ at Ba Ria General Hospital. The lung organ was transported by Cho Ray Hospital to Ho Chi Minh City and then airlifted to Hanoi. The surgery started at 9 pm on November 9 and lasted 9 hours until dawn on November 10. This is the second "cross-Vietnam" lung transplant in Vietnam, performed continuously "throughout the night", following the first case. After the transplant, the patient is being cared for and monitored post-operatively at the Lung Transplant Center, 24/7. Currently, the patient's health is progressing favorably.

Both patients had a history of complex lung disease (multiple bronchiectasis, COPD, many dangerous underlying diseases), had been monitored and waited for lung transplant for a long time and had indications for lung transplant. After surgery, both patients are receiving 24/7 post-operative care at the Lung Transplant Center, Central Lung Hospital.

This success affirms that the Central Lung Hospital, together with other hospitals and leading experts in Vietnam, have completely mastered the process of 2 lung transplants in one day. With the number of patients waiting for transplants, the Central Lung Hospital is ready to perform lung transplants when there is a potential source of organs. Lung transplants have become a routine technique performed in accordance with international standards at the Hospital.

With its current capacity, the Central Lung Hospital is not only a leading center for the treatment of respiratory diseases but also the first medical facility in Vietnam that can perform multiple lung transplants at the same time, contributing to realizing the dream of saving the lives of many patients.
