The mystery of the hundred-year-old trees that can gush water like a fountain

In India, a tree trunk over a hundred years old has been found that can squirt water out of its trunk after just a few cuts. This information was shared by Mr. Digvijay Singh Khati, a retired employee of the Indian Forest Service (IFS). He filmed this scene in a dry and humid deciduous forest in the south of the country. In the video , he uses a sickle to make a small cut on the trunk, causing the orange-yellow and almost tasteless water to shoot out.

Mr. Digvijay Singh Khati also said that the water that flows from this tree is a familiar drink for Indian foresters. They often use it in case they get lost in the forest.

This water-spraying tree has the scientific name Terminalia elliptica, belonging to the genus Terminalia, a genus containing about 100-190 species of large trees in the family Terminalia, distributed in tropical regions, with leaves growing only on the top.

Terminalia elliptica is native to southern and southeastern Asia, commonly found in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Terminalia elliptica has the ability to store water during the dry season and is covered with a fire-resistant bark. The plant is capable of continuously spraying 4 to 6 liters of water and then stopping to ensure that its nutrients are not lost too much.

Currently, no scientific report can explain the biological mechanism of this plant species because only about 5-10% of them have such properties.

Not only are there Terminalia elliptica trees in India, in the village of Dinoša in the southeast of Montenegro, a small country on the Adriatic coast, there is an ancient tree that can pour water from its trunk. The water flows from the trunk at a height of about 1.5 m. Especially, when it rains heavily, the water flows even more, making this ancient mulberry tree look like a fountain when viewed from afar.

According to locals, the ancient tree is 100 to 150 years old and this strange phenomenon has been occurring for about 30 years. This phenomenon has attracted thousands of curious tourists to come here every year.

Scientists also consider this a very rare natural phenomenon in the world . From a scientific perspective, the reason why the ancient mulberry tree automatically gushes water is due to the underground water source below the tree trunk. The water pressure increases to the point where water erupts through the mulberry tree.

Every time it rains heavily, the underground water is pushed up, seeping through the cracks and hollow parts of the tree and overflowing. That is why after every rain, even though it has stopped for a long time, the ancient mulberry tree still gushes water.

The phenomenon usually lasts for several days, depending on the amount of rain. During the eruption days, it is estimated that tens of liters of water are sprayed onto the ground.

The locals were so excited to witness this unique phenomenon that they named the tree “a miracle of Mother Nature”. Every time the tree sprayed water, people flocked to see it.
