City 404 in Gansu province.
In this age of satellite development, almost every building and street corner is clearly shown on satellite maps. However, in China, there is a mysterious city that cannot be found on any kind of map.
Strangely enough, the city is also named after a coded number, similar to a ghost town. City 404 is located near Dewapu Station, Yumen City, Gansu Province. To get there, you need to go to Dewapu Station, then go to the police station to get a permit. 404 was established during the tense Cold War period.
In 1958, when both the United States and the Soviet Union possessed nuclear weapons, China decided to devote all its efforts to researching nuclear bombs. The best people were gathered at 97.21 degrees east longitude and 40.10 degrees north latitude, turning the desert into City 404.
Scientists working here laid the foundations for China's nuclear and space programs. Deng Jiaxian, considered the father of Chinese nuclear physics, was among them.
Due to military secrecy, 404 does not appear on any maps. Underground in the city are bomb shelters. At the city's nuclear waste landfill, workers work in an environment exposed to high levels of radiation. They have to leave every half hour. After work, they have to bury their protective clothing. If they are not careful, they risk radiation exposure, hair loss, and even death.
There is a large cemetery on the mountain near the city, burying the people who worked there. They are people who devoted their lives to China's nuclear science. Many of them could not return to their hometown. More than 60 years have passed, the city has been abandoned, many people have left, but some people are forever lying on land that has no name on the map.
