The secret that helps Jeff Bezos lead the muscular billionaire trend

VnExpressVnExpress29/11/2023

To have a muscular and toned body at the age of 59, Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos regularly gets enough sleep, exercises outdoors and eats healthily.

Once slim, Jeff Bezos has recently gained attention for his muscular physique, a departure from the image of previous tech billionaires. He is one of the pioneers of the "muscular tycoon" trend - a new symbol of success for the super-rich.

Despite their habit of working out together, Lauren Sanchez, Jeff Bezos' fiancee, still has to admit that she can't keep up with the exercises he does.

“He's on a completely different level to me, a 'monster' in the gym,” she said.

According to Body and Soul, Bezos' body fat is around 12 to 14 percent. The ideal body fat percentage for men between the ages of 40 and 59 is 11 to 21 percent. Falling below that threshold can result in a gaunt appearance.

Bezos is one of the Silicon Valley's richest men who is passionate about jiu-jitsu and CrossFit, like Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

When Bezos exercises, he does low-impact, high-resistance exercises like rowing or weight lifting, according to his personal trainer, Wes Okerson. The Amazon founder also favors outdoor exercises like kayaking or running in the hills.

In addition to working out, the 59-year-old billionaire eats a high-protein diet, combined with foods containing healthy fats like avocados. As recommended by his trainer Okerson, he eats a combination of a keto diet, high in fat, moderate in protein and low in carbs.

In 2017, Bezos admitted that he used to eat unhealthy food, sometimes eating an entire box of Pillsbury cookies in a matter of hours. He started eating healthier after signing a deal with a food company and being inspired by healthy people.

Many CEOs, founders, and investors pride themselves on their habit of working at full capacity without needing to catch a wink of sleep, including Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, and former President Donald Trump. But Bezos says he has a very regular sleep schedule, and he understands that sleep is just as important as exercise in general.

Studies also show that healthy sleep benefits cognitive function, mood, mental health, cardiovascular health, brain health, and metabolism.

At a conference at the Economic Club in 2018, Bezos revealed that he regularly gets eight hours of sleep, unless he has to travel across time zones. According to him, this habit helps replenish energy and improve mood.

As his business grew more successful, Bezos became increasingly aware of the importance of sleep, especially for someone who manages a large workforce and regularly makes multimillion-dollar decisions.

If Amazon were still a startup with 100 employees, Bezos admits he might sacrifice sleep for the sake of growth. But with big profits comes big decisions and bigger bets.

In a 2017 study published in the journal Annals of Neurology, researchers looked at the impact of sleep deprivation on daily behavior. They found that people who slept less often made poor financial choices. At the beginning of the week, sleep deprivation had little effect on the volunteers’ mood. But as the number of sleepless nights increased, more of them made risky decisions.
