(HNMO) - On the afternoon of May 14, the athlete pair Dinh Anh Hoang - Tran Mai Ngoc excellently defeated the very strong athlete pair Zhe Yu Chew - Jian Zeng (Singapore) in the final match of the mixed doubles event to win the first gold medal for Vietnamese table tennis at this year's SEA Games.
This is the historic Gold Medal that we have been waiting for 24 years since the Gold Medal of the athlete pair Vu Manh Cuong - Ngo Thu Thuy (SEA Games 1999).
In the mixed doubles final, in the first set, a surprise happened when the two Vietnamese players won. Entering the match, the two players Zhe Yu Chew - Jian Zeng took a big lead of 10-3 and only had 1 point left to end the match. However, the two Singaporean players did not expect Dinh Anh Hoang and Tran Mai Ngoc to be so persistent and courageous. The two Vietnamese players did the unthinkable by scoring 7 consecutive points, tying the score at 10-10 and winning 13-11, taking the lead 1-0.
Continuing the momentum, Dinh Anh Hoang - Tran Mai Ngoc continued to win the second game with a score of 11-8, raising the score to 2-0. Although losing the third game with a score of 8-11, but winning the fourth game with a close score of 14-12, the two Vietnamese players Dinh Anh Hoang - Tran Mai Ngoc won the final 3-1 against the Singaporean pair to win the Gold Medal after 24 years of waiting for the Vietnamese table tennis team.
In the men's doubles, the Nguyen Anh Tu - Nguyen Duc Tuan pair lost to the Malaysian pair and stopped in the quarterfinals, while Dinh Anh Hoang - Le Dinh Duc were eliminated in the first match against the Singaporean pair.
In the women's doubles, Tran Mai Ngoc - Nguyen Thi Nga also stopped at the quarterfinals after losing to the Malaysian pair. Meanwhile, the remaining pair, Nguyen Khoa Dieu Khanh - Nguyen Hanh Ngan, were eliminated in the first match.
