Sweet fruits on the prairie
From June to August, the wild myrtle berry season is in full swing, attracting many visitors from afar to explore and experience the Bui Hui grassland in Ba Trang commune, Ba To district, Quang Ngai province. The Bui Hui myrtle hill covers approximately 20 hectares, and during each season, an average person can harvest 10-15 kg of myrtle berries per day. Wild myrtle berries are sold at the hill for 15,000 VND/kg and at the market for over 20,000 VND/kg. The myrtle hill on the grassland has provided employment and stable income of 300,000-400,000 VND per day for nearly 100 Hre ethnic households in Bui Hui village. Currently, with the support of the State and local authorities, the people are protecting and caring for the myrtle hill, preserving the natural landscape, and helping the Hre people earn additional income and achieve sustainable poverty reduction.
A portion of the harvested sim fruit is used by locals to make sim wine and sim syrup under the technical guidance of the Ba To District Women's Union, for personal use and sale on the market.
In recent years, Ba To district has implemented numerous mechanisms and policies to attract and facilitate investment in the tourism sector within the district. The Bui Hui grassland area has been approved by competent authorities for wind power development, combined with community-based tourism development.
Recognizing the economic value of the myrtle plant, and identifying the development of the economy linked to the conservation and development of wild myrtle trees combined with tourism as a new and long-term direction, Ba To district has planned a myrtle cultivation area of nearly 20 hectares, with 30 households participating. The Central Highlands poverty reduction project in Ba To district has also stepped in, supporting people with materials, organizing training, and providing technical assistance during the production process. The People's Committee of Ba To district also requested relevant departments and agencies to support the implementation of the Bui Hui wild myrtle management, protection, exploitation, and processing project to enhance the value of the wild myrtle tree in the area. This is a direction to create a unique tourism product and increase income for the people.
The steppe awakens.
Bui Hui village has 104 households and 320 inhabitants, all of whom are Hre ethnic minority people. Since the beginning of 2022, with the extension of the national power grid and thanks to the government's attention, the road connecting Ba To town to Ba Trang, Ba Kham communes and Duc Pho town has been invested in and constructed. Improved road access has created a driving force for socio-economic development in the locality. As a result, the face of Ba Trang commune has gradually changed significantly, and the lives of the people have improved.
Besides its beautiful scenery, visitors to Bui Hui grassland can also enjoy cultural activities of the Hre ethnic community such as gong performances, tours and experiences of traditional brocade weaving, cultural exchanges in H'choi (Ka choi) and Ta teu (Ka leu) dances and songs, and Brooc musical instruments… This is great potential to create community tourism destinations with the distinctive cultural features of ethnic minorities in the Ba To mountains.
In recent years, Ba To district has implemented numerous mechanisms and policies to attract and facilitate investment in the tourism sector within the district. The Bui Hui grassland area has been authorized by competent authorities for wind power development, combined with community tourism development. The Bui Hui Grassland Tourism and Agriculture Cooperative was established in July 2023 with 16 members, leveraging local tourism strengths and developing agricultural production.
Mr. Truong Quang Dien, Director of the Bui Hui Grassland Tourism and Agriculture Cooperative, shared that during the recent April 30th - May 1st holiday, Bui Hui grassland welcomed 5,000 visitors for sightseeing and relaxation. Recognizing that agricultural tourism will be a driving force in the implementation of the new rural development movement, the cooperative is leveraging its natural advantages and traditional crafts to increase the income of local people.
It is known that Quang Ngai province has also approved the Tourism Development Plan until 2025, with a vision to 2030, which includes the development of community tourism. This is a suitable direction in the current context, creating conditions to solve employment problems and facilitate career changes for people in the project area, contributing to changing the economic structure from purely agricultural production to services, and transforming the rural landscape in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.
