According to the feedback from households raising fish in cages on the Bo River, the prolonged and intense heat and weak river currents have caused a high risk of fish lacking oxygen and dying. People have actively implemented many measures to protect their fish during the hot season under the guidance of local authorities and functional agencies.
However, during the process of thinning and moving the cages to areas with favorable water conditions, some fish cages in Quang Tho commune died and were lost. The authorities inspected and tested the dead fish for disease but no signs of disease were found.
Previously, on June 21, the provincial Department of Fisheries coordinated with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Dien district and the People's Committee of Quang Tho commune to inspect the implementation of cage fish farming on the Bo River and provide guidance on management and implementation of technical solutions for aquaculture in hot weather conditions. The results showed that the farming area had a gentle flow and the fish grew normally. Some cages experienced fish deaths and losses during the thinning and moving process, but no pathology was detected.
However, the hot weather will continue, technical staff continue to recommend that farmers increase active care, regularly monitor the weather and environment to detect early abnormal conditions of fish, and apply some appropriate measures. Accordingly, check and maintain machinery, equipment, fuel, and effervescent tablets ready for aeration to increase the amount of oxygen for fish when there is no flow on the Bo River.
The care process requires adding vitamin C, minerals, digestive enzymes, etc. to the fish's concentrated food to increase resistance and immunity. When the water temperature is above 35°C, reduce the amount of food to 1/3 of normal; stop feeding the fish when the water environment is above 39-40ºC. At the same time, collect leftover food, dead (diseased) aquatic animals, clean the cage, and hang lime bags in the cage to limit the growth of pathogens.
The severe and prolonged heat in recent times has also caused some aquaculture products in rivers and lagoons to die sporadically. The main cause is due to sudden and erratic changes in environmental factors, high water temperature, the emergence of some toxic gases and toxic algae that are harmful to aquaculture products. The aquaculture industry and localities are continuing to monitor and guide farmers to implement measures to care for and protect aquaculture products during the hot season.
