Beauty contests lose appeal

Compared to before, the number of beauty contests held in Vietnam has increased significantly. However, the level of interest of fans in these contests is not as high as before.

Besides major competitions such as Miss Vietnam, Miss Cosmo Vietnam, Miss Universe Vietnam, Miss Grand Vietnam, there are currently many other competitions such as Miss Idol Vietnam, Miss Sea Vietnam Global... Not to mention the many beauty contests for business people held all year round.

The fact that many beauty contests take place leads to cases such as in less than 1 month, Vietnam has 3 more beauty queens; 2 girls are crowned 2 contests in the same night, or the story of a beauty who just finished one contest and then took the opportunity to register in another contest to seek a title... The public has not yet remembered the name of this beauty queen when another girl is crowned.

From the experience of a contestant, Ms. Huong Ly, National Director of Miss Universe Vietnam, assessed the difference between the previous and current contestants in terms of quality and impression on the public. She shared: "This is not something that can be achieved overnight, but is cultivated over many years through the contestants' work process. With the frequency of organizing too many contests like now, the quality of contestants has gradually spread out, not as concentrated as before. That partly limits the attention of the audience."

Sharing the same opinion, expert Phuc Nguyen said that the many beauty contests being held have reduced the value of the beauty queen title compared to before. According to him, in the past, there were only a few contests each year, so the number of "high-quality" contestants was quite large. That required candidates to invest and be serious because there were not many opportunities. From there, the organizing committee also had many options when choosing the winner. "Now, if you don't compete in this contest, you compete in another, so the investment and quality of the contestants have also decreased," Mr. Phuc Nguyen acknowledged.

Not to mention, the fact that some beauty pageants or beauty queens are involved in scandals after their coronation is also one of the reasons why beauty pageants are less attractive than before. Miss Cosmo VN 2025 once caused a stir when a contestant who withdrew from the competition continuously posted negative posts about the contest. Most recently, Miss Universe has also been constantly embroiled in controversies related to contestants and organizers, causing the professional quality or message of the contest to be almost overwhelmed, while the public is fed up with the noise and scandals.

What should the organizers and candidates do?

From that general situation, many people ask themselves "when will beauty contests return to their golden age?".

Taking on the role of head of the organizing committee of many beauty contests, Mr. Pham Duy Khanh said that each arena will have its own criteria. This is also a factor that helps the contests attract contestants with appropriate orientation. Mr. Khanh gave the example of the Miss Tourism Vietnam Global contest carrying the message of promoting regional culture and cuisine , while Miss Earth Vietnam aims to protect the environment. "To survive and develop, the contest must have a clear theme so that the girls not only compete but also bring real values, using their influence to spread positive things," Mr. Khanh shared. At the same time, the head of the organizing committee of Miss Tourism Vietnam Global said that the media factor also needs to be focused on to promote the contest's message as well as attract interested audiences.

Meanwhile, training expert Phuc Nguyen raised the issue: "The first criterion for a beauty contest is that the contestant must be beautiful in appearance and knowledge. Therefore, a contestant who is accepted must first of all possess those factors, without being interfered with by other professional factors."

In fact, many current competitions do not meet the audience's expectations regarding the quality of the contestants, leading to controversy over the crowned girl. Ms. Huong Ly acknowledged that the efforts of the candidates are also something to pay attention to. "Each period will be different, which requires the organizing units and competitions to change and be creative in order to attract and find truly good quality candidates. In addition, contestants must improve their own skills and be serious when registering for a competition. Because you are the deciding factor for the competition. You cannot depend on the governing unit but must find a way to develop your own color," she expressed.
