This request was made by lawmakers and is expected to be implemented from January 19, 2025.

Previously, the US federal appeals court decided to uphold the ruling requiring ByteDance, TikTok's parent company based in China, to divest from TikTok US or comply with the ban on the TikTok application in the US.

Republican Rep. John Moolenaar, who is also the chairman of the committee, and the committee's top Democrats are lobbying TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew to sell the app.

" Congress must take decisive action to protect U.S. national security and protect TikTok users in the United States. We call on TikTok to immediately and conditionally divest ," the lawmakers stressed.

Apple, Alphabet and TikTok have not commented on the matter.

Previously, on December 9, ByteDance and TikTok filed an emergency petition with the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, requesting more time to respond to requests to the US Supreme Court as the ban deadline approaches. However, on December 14, the Court of Appeals rejected the request.

Then, on December 11, the US Justice Department said that when the ban takes effect, it would “not directly prohibit continued use of TikTok” for Apple or Google device users who have downloaded TikTok. However, over time, the government will take appropriate actions and “ultimately render the app inoperable.”

Meanwhile, TikTok said that once the ban is implemented, the app will be "no longer available to half the country" but warned that ending the service would "cripple and render the platform completely unusable".

Republican Senator Josh Hawley hopes ByteDance will sell TikTok. "The law is the law. This app is under Chinese supervision, and that's the problem," he said.
