In an interview broadcast on CBS on November 2, local time, US President Donald Trump gave an answer to the speculations of the past few months about whether Washington would allow the sale of Blackwell chips to China or not.

"We'll let them (China) deal with Nvidia, but not with the most advanced technology. The most advanced technology, we won't let anybody but the United States have it," Mr. Trump said in his first interview on CBS's 60 Minutes program in five years.

Stressing that the AI race is a big deal, the US leader asserted that Washington is leading the race by a very large margin.

Nvidia, the world's most valuable company, dominates the AI chip market. "The Blackwell that just came out is 10 years ahead of any other chip. But no, we don't give that chip to anybody else," Reuters also quoted Mr. Trump as saying after a weekend in Florida.

The possibility that the US might allow Blackwell chips to be sold to Chinese companies has drawn criticism from China hawks in Washington, who fear the technology will boost China’s military capabilities and accelerate its AI development.

Republican Congressman John Moolenaar, chairman of the House China Select Committee, said this was “akin to supplying weapons-grade uranium to Iran.”

Trump had previously hinted that he might discuss chips with Chinese President Xi Jinping at their summit in South Korea last week. But he ultimately said the two had not discussed the topic.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently revealed that Nvidia did not apply for a US export license for the Chinese market due to Beijing's stance. "They have made it very clear that they do not want Nvidia there (in China) right now," he said.

Nvidia said last week it would supply more than 260,000 Blackwell AI chips to South Korea and some of the country's largest companies, including Samsung.

Better to do business with China than not at all

In an interview with CBS, Mr. Trump also praised the recent trade deal with China, declaring that he has a "great relationship" with the country and "would rather get along with China than not."

Under the newly reached one-year trade deal, Beijing will ease restrictions on rare earth exports and buy more US agricultural products in exchange for Washington reducing tariffs on the country.
