US technology corporation Microsoft on November 3 announced plans to invest $15.2 billion in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the 2023-2029 period to support the development of cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI) in this Gulf country.
Details of the investment were announced during a meeting between Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, and Microsoft President Brad Smith.
Microsoft said the money will be invested in developing AI and digital infrastructure, as well as improving the skills of local workforce through training programs and research and development initiatives.
Sheikh Khaled affirmed that Microsoft's $15.2 billion investment demonstrates global confidence in the UAE's long-term economic vision to build a diversified economy based on knowledge and technology.
For his part, Mr. Smith emphasized: "With our investment in the UAE, we are not only focusing on growing our business but also contributing to the UAE economy. This is a combination of three important factors: technology, talent and trust."
Microsoft’s investment will strengthen the deep and enduring technology partnership between the UAE and the US, reflecting the two countries’ shared commitment to harnessing AI for sustainable growth, economic diversification, and creating opportunity for future generations.
Microsoft will invest more than $7.3 billion in the UAE between 2023 and the end of this year, including $1.5 billion in G42 (a UAE AI and cloud company). From the beginning of 2026 to the end of 2029, Microsoft will spend more than $7.9 billion in the UAE.
Microsoft has also established a global engineering development center and the Microsoft AI for Good Lab in Abu Dhabi to support research and innovation in responsible AI and large-scale modeling. Microsoft is committed to skilling one million people in the UAE by 2027, including 120,000 government employees, 175,000 students, and 39,000 teachers.
Microsoft said it has worked closely with both the US and UAE governments to ensure compliance with standards on cybersecurity, export controls and responsible AI.
Over the past decade, the UAE has invested heavily in the AI sector with the aim of becoming a leading country in this field, as part of its economic diversification strategy./.
