In recent years, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism , the Provincial High School for the Gifted, and the Provincial Sports Training and Competition have focused on developing Vovinam into a key sport of the province. Since its establishment (2010) up to now, each year, the Vovinam Department has selected and added new factors at the grassroots level and through provincial tournaments to focus on training to become a high-performance competition force. By November 2024, the Dong Thap Vovinam Department has over 20 athletes in the following categories: selected, young and gifted.
To improve the quality of athlete training, the Dong Thap Vovinam Coaching Board regularly participates in professional training courses and updates on modern training methods organized by the Vietnam Vovinam Federation. From there, they apply them to the training process, ensuring that they are suitable for the physical condition and talent of local athletes. In addition, Vovinam athletes regularly participate in training sessions and exchange with strong units; compete in many regional and national tournaments, so they develop quickly in terms of technique and tactics. According to the Dong Thap Vovinam Coaching Board, although the number of athletes is still modest, most of the Vovinam athletes have good expertise, especially the group of martial artists who are good at fighting.
In 2024, Dong Thap Vovinam will participate in 4 tournaments including: National Vovinam Championship for Strong Teams (April, in Gia Lai Province); National Vovinam Youth Championship (June, hosted by Thanh Hoa Province); Southern Vovinam Championship (in Dong Nai Province in August) and National Vovinam Championship (held in October, in Quang Nam Province). Thanks to their bravery in competition, Dong Thap Vovinam martial artists have achieved many achievements for the province's sports.
The most impressive result was the 30th National Vovinam Championship in 2024. This is the most important tournament in 2024 for Vovinam athletes, due to the fierce competition with nearly 450 athletes from 34 provinces, cities and sectors across the country competing. Assessing the professional quality of the tournament, the Dong Thap Vovinam Coaching Board sent the 5 best athletes to participate in the tournament with the goal of striving to win gold medals.
Overcoming psychological barriers, confidently demonstrating personal techniques and tactics of the coaching board, Dong Thap vovinam athletes brought glory to the sports of the Red Lotus Land with 1 gold medal, 1 silver medal, 1 bronze medal. In addition, at youth tournaments, strong team tournaments and Southern vovinam tournaments, the Red Lotus Land vovinam discipline also won many medals, exceeding the set target. Closing the year 2024 with impressive competition, Dong Thap vovinam athletes contributed to the province's high-performance sports with 5 gold medals, 2 silver medals, 4 bronze medals.
In addition to the collective achievements, the success of Dong Thap Vovinam also comes from the excellent performance of the players that the coaching board has high expectations for. Continuing to excel in the women's 75kg weight class, martial artist Bui Thi Thao Ngan completed the "triple win" by winning gold medals at the following tournaments: National Championship, National Strong Team Championship and Southern Championship. Sharing her feelings about her achievements in 2024, athlete Bui Thi Thao Ngan - Dong Thap Vovinam, said: “I am very happy because my efforts in training and competing were rewarded with valuable gold medals. Of which, the gold medal at the National Vovinam Championship left the most impression on me. Because to achieve this glory, I had to overcome strong athletes of the country. Especially in the semi-finals against the very strong martial artist Hoang Thi Hang (Hanoi), the match was tense and lasted until extra time and I won thanks to scoring a "golden goal". Overcoming the pressure of the semi-finals helped me gain confidence in the final match and overcome athlete Tran Thi Ngan Vy (Vinh Long) with a score of 1 - 0, winning the gold medal".
Coach Tran Hoai Han - Dong Thap Vovinam Department, said: “Currently, the main athletes of Dong Thap Vovinam are reaching “maturity” in terms of expertise and stable performance; young factors are developing quickly, enthusiastic, and eager in training and competing. Thanks to that, the achievements of the department are constantly improving year by year, especially in 2024, all the gold medals were won in the participating tournaments. This is the basis for Dong Thap Vovinam Department to aim for higher goals in 2025...”.
