Seasonal

To grow tomatoes effectively, the most important thing is to determine the right tomato planting season. According to experts, tomatoes can be planted at any time, but there are three tomato planting seasons in the North with two most suitable hot and cold seasons:

- Winter-Spring crop: Planted in October-November, harvested in January-February of the following year.

- Spring-Summer crop: Plant in December-January, harvest in March-April of the following year.

- Summer-Autumn crop: Plant in June-July, harvest in September-October.

Soil

Tomatoes can be grown in many different types of soil, but you should refer to organic soil that is both clean and full of nutrients for potted plants. Tomatoes require soil that is rich in organic nutrients.

The simple way is to mix soil and rice husks with composted fish manure or chicken manure (use any type of organic fertilizer available). If you cannot compost organic green manure at home, you can buy it ready-made at the store.

Light: Tomatoes are light-loving plants, so the ideal planting location for tomatoes is a place with full sunlight, at least 6-7 hours/day. Tomatoes need a lot of warm sunlight to have a delicious flavor.

Other tools: Plant trowel, watering can, hole punch if using styrofoam box.

Mr. Nguyen Giau, in Ho Chi Minh City, shared how to grow tomatoes on VnExpress Newspaper as follows:

- You need to prepare a larger pot so that the tomato plant will develop stronger roots and absorb more nutrients than a small pot, resulting in larger plants and fruit, more fruit and higher quality.

- New soil and nursery soil: According to Mr. Giau, you need to mix a mixture of 60% clean soil + 40% rice husk ash, coconut fiber, peanut shells, add a little lime + vermicompost, mix the mixture well, sprinkle a layer of Tricodema fungus on the surface, then water enough moisture and cover tightly and incubate for 7-10 days.

- Old soil: After harvesting, flood the pot with water 2-3 times to wash away all remaining fertilizer from the previous crop, leave the soil fallow for 7-10 days then mix again as above.

- When you buy tomato seeds, soak them in water for 2 hours, then take them out and incubate them in a damp towel. Keep them in a cool place, wrap them in a plastic bag and keep them in the dark so the seeds will germinate faster.

After about 24 - 48 hours, the seeds will crack. Sow the seeds in the nursery tray (some tougher seeds will germinate after 3-4 days).

According to Mr. Giau, when sowing seeds, you should place them horizontally or slightly tilt the cracked root end down. After sowing, water them and put the tray back in the same place. In a dark place, the seeds will germinate faster.

After 2-3 days when the seeds emerge from the ground, you need to take the nursery tray out to a place with light sunlight, completely covered from rain, watering twice a day in the early morning and cool afternoon.

Add a little vermicompost at this time to help the seedlings grow stronger (or you can water with diluted fish manure at a ratio of 3-5ml/1l of water).

Then you transplant the plant into a pot when it reaches a height of about 10-15cm.

According to experts, tomato plants need 6-8 hours of sunlight per day, so you should place the pot in the sunniest spot in the garden or on the windowsill.

Each tomato variety has a different growth rate and harvest schedule, but usually 60-100 days. When the tomatoes are ripe or almost ripe, you can harvest them and bring them indoors for use. You can also separate the seeds from the harvested tomatoes, plant fresh seeds (separate and plant them directly in the ground) or dry them for planting the next crop - the next crop of tomatoes may be smaller than this one, but the growth potential will be better.
