Immediately after the Hanoi Department of Education and Training announced the competition rate for public 10th grade, many parents fell into a state of anxiety and disappointment because suburban schools, where the benchmark scores were low in previous years, have a skyrocketing competition rate this year.

A typical example is Quang Minh High School in Me Linh district, with a competition ratio of 1/1.75 - ranked 14th in terms of competition for grade 10, up 72 places compared to last year. This is the school that increased its ranking the most.

Next, Ngo Thi Nham High School, Thuong Tin District, increased 60 places, making it into the top 7 with the highest competition ratio. With the same increase, Pham Hong Thai High School, Ba Dinh District, from 71st place last year, holds the 11th place this year, with a competition ratio of approximately 1/1.8.

Schools located in suburban areas that jumped more than 40 places in competition ratio include Phu Xuyen B, Hong Thai, Tien Thinh, Trung Gia, Ngoc Tao, Minh Ha, and Hop Thanh.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ly (43 years old, Hoai Duc, Hanoi) could not hide her confusion when she learned that Hoai Duc C High School - the school that the family considered a "safe door" for their daughter's first choice, was unexpectedly in the top 5 schools with the highest competition rate in the city. This year, the school only recruited 540 students but received 1,074 applications.

"My daughter is a good student. We calculated very carefully, looked at the admission scores of previous years before deciding to register, but now the school has become a hot spot. These past few days, I have been in a state of confusion, like sitting on a bed of fire," said Ms. Ly.

It was only when she joined parent groups that Ms. Ly realized that many people shared the same thought, that choosing a rural school that few people paid attention to would increase the chances of being admitted. However, this very mentality caused schools that were thought to be safe areas to suddenly become hot spots.

Even though choices 2 and 3 have lower competition rates, the female parent still earnestly hopes that her child can be admitted to choice 1 so that she won't be teased by her friends.

Knowing that her child has good academic performance and admitting that the competition for admission to public 10th grade in Hanoi is like a "fire pan", Ms. Dong Phuong Dung (41 years old, Dong Da, Hanoi) is cautious when choosing a school. Although her house is less than 2km from Kim Lien High School and Dong Da High School, the mother and daughter still decided to "avoid" these top schools because they were afraid that the competition rate was too high.

After much consideration, she and her daughter chose Phan Dinh Phung High School as their first choice and Pham Hong Thai High School as their second choice, schools that the family considered within their reach. However, the announcement of the competition rate this year made Dung "sweat". Phan Dinh Phung High School is in the top 10 schools with the highest competition rate in the city, while Pham Hong Thai High School is only one or two places away from the highest group.

“At first, I chose two schools with a safe mindset, one that was within my child’s ability. Unexpectedly, that careful calculation has now turned into a fierce battle. Perhaps many parents have the same mentality, so the school that was considered within my child’s ability is now full of applications,” said Ms. Dung, comparing choosing a public 10th grade school for her child to playing the lottery.

Although she still has her third choice to enter a school with a low competition rate, Ms. Dung still hopes that her child will have enough points to pass one of the first two schools. “My family does not put too much emphasis on having to pass a top school, just an environment that suits her ability and is convenient for her to study is enough. But now, even choosing a suitable choice is no longer easy,” the female parent sighed.

Faced with concerns about the sharp increase in competition rates for mid- and bottom-tier schools this year, Ms. Nguyen Thao Linh, a teacher at Co Loa High School, advised parents and students to approach these numbers with a clear mind and evaluate them comprehensively instead of getting caught up in a state of panic and insecurity.

" The competition rate can affect the psychology of parents and students, but it is important to understand that it is only a reference information channel. It does not fully reflect the quality of the application or the ability to pass or fail of each individual. Looking at the benchmark scores of previous school years for analysis is a more realistic and reliable way to do it," Ms. Linh analyzed.

In particular, as the exam approaches, the female teacher emphasized that the most important thing is not to worry about uncontrollable factors such as competition rates, but to maintain a steady spirit, health and review strategy. There is not much time left, if students can stay calm, avoid distractions and maintain a reasonable study pace, they can completely improve their abilities and achieve good results.

The female teacher also sent a message to parents to be a spiritual support, instead of becoming a source of pressure. When parents are too stressed, students will also be affected and wavering. " Trust, stability and clear direction from the family are the most precious gifts that children need right now," Ms. Linh emphasized.
