In Ho Chi Minh City, many trucks along roads such as Nguyen Van Cu (District 10), Pham Van Dong (Thu Duc City), Tran Xuan Soan (District 7)... and stalls at traditional markets, oranges are piled up with prices ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 VND/kg.
Stopping to buy 3 kg of oranges, Ms. Le Diem Trinh (living in District 10) shared: “My family often drinks orange juice, so every time I go to the market, I usually buy a few kg to have ready. Around October, oranges are sold for about 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg, but these past few days when I went to the market, I found them so cheap that I bought more.”
Explaining why oranges are sold at the market at a cheap price, Mr. Nguyen Trung, a fruit vendor in District 3, shared: “Oranges are in season, but in the gardens in the West and Binh Duong , the prices are not good, many of our regular customers have to give cheap prices to traders in Ho Chi Minh City. A few years ago, oranges in the garden cost more than 12,000 VND/kg, but now it is only a few thousand VND/kg.”
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Huy - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Bac Tan Uyen district (Binh Duong), in recent years, in Bac Tan Uyen district, a specialized citrus fruit growing area has been formed in the areas along the Be River and Dong Nai River and the Intellectual Property Office has granted the collective trademark "Bac Tan Uyen oranges, tangerines, and grapefruits".
However, many farms and agricultural cooperatives are currently in the harvest season, but are having difficulty selling their products, and are currently holding a large amount of oranges. This situation affects the lives of orange farmers.
To join hands to support the consumption of oranges and remove difficulties for farms and agricultural cooperatives in Bac Tan Uyen district, the Standing Committee of the District Farmers' Association sent a letter to units, localities and businesses in the whole province, requesting to join hands to rescue agricultural products.
Previously, around February 2023, the price of oranges from the Mekong Delta provinces also dropped, the price at the garden was only 1,000-3,000 VND/kg, so many people joined hands to rescue. Retail systems also joined in buying oranges at the garden to support farmers in the West and bring them to points of sale for consumption.
