Traditional markets are gradually losing customers.

Recently, at traditional markets throughout the city, sluggish business has become widespread, with many stalls closing and traders leaving the markets due to a sharp decline in purchasing power.

At Hoa Cuong wholesale market (Hoa Cuong ward), Ms. Nguyen Thi Le Hang, a small trader selling agricultural products, shared: "The number of customers has decreased significantly, and many wholesale and retail stalls selling agricultural products have closed down completely because they cannot afford to maintain operations."

According to Ms. Hang, the rapid development of online shopping channels and modern distribution systems such as supermarkets and convenience stores has gradually changed consumers' shopping habits. Goods are delivered to their homes, prices are transparent, while traditional markets lack innovation, leading to a gradual loss of appeal.

A similar situation is occurring at Hoa Khanh Market (Lien Chieu Ward). Ms. Tran Thi Van, a fashion vendor, said: "Doing business in the market is very difficult right now. Outside, street vendors are selling everything from clothes and household goods to meat, fish, and seafood... they set up their stalls wherever it's convenient, making customers hesitant to enter the market."

According to Ms. Van, stalls selling shoes and clothes located on the upper floors are even more difficult to reach customers. In addition, the increasing trend of online shopping is causing fashion items in the market to lose their competitive advantage. “Nowadays, customers can just stay at home and browse on their phones to have goods delivered to their door, at cheap prices and with a wide variety of designs. My wish is to have the stall rental costs reduced to alleviate some of the difficulties during this period,” Ms. Van shared.

Cam Le Market currently has about 750 stalls, but purchasing power has decreased by more than 30%. According to the market management board, with the strong development of modern retail systems and e-commerce channels, if small traders do not change their business models, it will be difficult for them to survive.

At the market, adapting to new shopping trends, some young vendors have proactively changed their sales methods. Vendor Dinh Thi Cam Tu (Cam Le Market) shared: “I started combining in-store and online sales. In the evening, I take pictures of my goods and post them on Facebook and Zalo. In the morning, I still go to the market as usual, and at lunchtime, I take advantage of the time to deliver orders to online customers. Thanks to this, the number of customers has increased, and my income is more stable.”

The Cam Le Market Management Board announced that it will coordinate the organization of sales skills training courses, introduce online sales channels, and guide the use of social media to promote products. Simultaneously, it will promote and encourage traders to embrace digital transformation, promote products through social media, and invest in improving market infrastructure to ensure a civilized, safe, and hygienic business environment, thereby attracting customers back.

The Department of Industry and Trade stated that in the coming period, the unit will actively coordinate with the People's Committees of communes and wards to organize and implement a program to support small traders in digital transformation and livestreaming sales to boost product consumption, given the increasing difficulties in business operations at markets. Communes and wards also need to focus on reorganizing market business models to suit the specific characteristics of each locality, and review and develop investment plans for renovating dilapidated markets.
