Cambodia starts construction of Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway project

On the morning of June 7, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway project took place in Dey Edth Commune, Kandal Province, chaired by Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen. This is a route connecting to the Ho Chi Minh City-Moc Bai Expressway in Vietnam.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of ministries, armed forces and a large number of local people. Vietnamese Ambassador to Cambodia Nguyen Huy Tang, Chinese Ambassador Wang Wentian and a number of international guests attended the event.
Speaking here, Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen highly appreciated the important significance of highway development in the economic and social life of the country.
“The Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway is an important route connecting Cambodia with Vietnam as well as with ASEAN countries,” he affirmed.
The groundbreaking ceremony of the Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway project attracted the attention of many people from all walks of life.
According to the Cambodian Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the expressway connecting the capital Phnom Penh with Bavet city, Svay Rieng province (bordering Tay Ninh province) is over 135km long. The starting point is Phnom Penh Ring Road 3; the section passing through Kandal province is 4.1km long; the section passing through Prey Veng province is 70.9km long and the section passing through Svay Rieng province to the border is 60.1km long. The investment cost for the project is about 1.6 billion USD.
According to the design, the road is 25.5m wide with 4 lanes, 2 lanes in each direction. This expressway is built to promote connectivity, economic and social development in the border area; especially to enhance import and export activities, trade exchange between Cambodia and Vietnam, as well as with countries in the region.

This is the second expressway project to be built in Cambodia, after the 187km Phnom Penh-Preah Sihanouk route, which was put into use at the end of 2022.
Both of these highways are invested in and constructed by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model.
At the groundbreaking ceremony of the Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway project, the Cambodian government also started construction of a large bridge across the Mekong River, connecting to this expressway.
