On June 4, a health official in Pursat province, northwestern Cambodia, confirmed that one person died and 27 others were hospitalized after drinking homemade rice wine suspected to contain excessively high levels of methanol.
According to Deputy Director of the Pursat Provincial Health Department, Mr. Teuk Sopheap, the incident occurred at the funeral of a resident of Morth Prey village, Krakor district on the evening of June 1 after attendees drank homemade wine.
The victims all had symptoms such as skin irritation, chest pain, difficulty breathing, headaches, and dizziness after drinking homemade alcohol.
The official said the condition of the 27 hospitalized people had improved and was not life-threatening.
Authorities have taken wine samples for analysis to clarify the cause of the incident.
Homemade rice wine is very popular in rural areas of Cambodia due to its low cost.
