The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion needs about 110,000 units of blood and 12,000 units of platelets for emergency and treatment during the year-end and Tet holidays.
The information was announced by Dr. Tran Ngoc Que, Director of the National Blood Center, National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, at the 15th Voluntary Heart Blood Donation Festival on December 2, in response to International Volunteer Day, December 5.
"The Institute needs about 110,000 units of blood and 12,000 units of platelets in the next 3 months to meet the emergency and treatment needs of 182 medical facilities in 31 provinces and cities," said Dr. Que, hoping that thanks to the units with the expected blood donation schedule, the Institute will basically ensure this need.

Previously, Tet and summer were the two times when blood donations were most scarce. Currently, blood donation programs before and after Tet have basically solved the shortage of blood for treatment.
Since 2009, the Volunteer Heart Festival has been held to meet the need for blood for emergency and treatment at the end of the year. This is one of the four large-scale blood donation events held in Hanoi . Over 14 periods, the program has attracted more than 40,000 participants and received 32,162 units of blood.
"This year's festival aims to collect at least 2,500 units of blood, contributing to other programs to prepare blood reserves for the end of the year and New Year," said Dr. Que.
The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion is the leading specialized institute in hematology and blood transfusion in the country. The Institute is responsible for providing safe blood and blood products to 160 hospitals in 26 provinces and cities, serving the medical examination and treatment needs of nearly 40 million people in the Northern region, equivalent to nearly half of Vietnam's population.
