- According to many residents in Lang Nac village, Mai Sao commune, Chi Lang district, the situation of littering in the stream flowing through the village has been happening for many years. However, this situation has not been completely resolved.
Untreated waste is dumped along the stream in Lang Nac village, Mai Sao commune.
According to the people's feedback, we went to survey the Mai Sao stream area flowing through Lang Nac village in mid-May 2025. In reality, we found many types of garbage scattered along the stream and under the stream. In particular, the main types of household waste are difficult to decompose such as plastic bags, bottles, jars. Mixed with that are organic waste and food packaging.
The above situation has greatly affected the aesthetics of the residential area and is at risk of polluting water sources and soil. According to our observations, the stream water here is pitch black and has a foul odor.
Ms. Hoang Thi Thu Huyen, a resident of Lang Nac village, said: Most of the people here use water from dug wells or seepage wells (wells that collect water from osmosis) right next to the stream to serve their daily needs such as drinking and bathing. However, in recent years, too much garbage has appeared in the stream, making my family and other households here very worried about the impact on health.
According to many people in Lang Nac village, in the past, the water in Mai Sao stream was very clear and clean. Many people still directly bathed and washed clothes in the stream. However, in the past 5 years, the situation of dumping garbage into the stream has occurred frequently, making the water source no longer usable for daily life, making the people of Lang Nac village worried and upset. It is known that out of 157 households in Lang Nac village, nearly 100 households are upset by the above situation.
Talking with Mr. Nguyen Quoc Khanh, Head of Lang Nac village, we learned that the above situation occurs mainly because some people lack awareness, do not treat household waste but directly throw it into the stream. In addition, many people from neighboring areas come to bathe and picnic in the summer and often throw garbage into the stream. There is no unit to collect and treat garbage in the area, while the amount of garbage from households is increasing and there are many types of garbage that cannot be treated by burning or burying. People in the village have repeatedly petitioned the Commune People's Committee to find solutions to handle and overcome the situation. However, the above situation has not been completely resolved.
Learning more from the People's Committee of Mai Sao Commune, we learned that, based on the people's feedback, recently, the commune government has organized a number of campaigns to clean up and treat garbage in the stream area flowing through Lang Nac village. At the same time, reminding people to raise their awareness of environmental hygiene and not to litter indiscriminately into the stream. However, only a short time after cleaning up, the above situation recurred.
To rectify the situation, the People's Committee of Mai Sao commune has propagated to households in Lang Nac village and neighboring villages to collect and treat garbage at home, not to throw garbage into the stream. However, there are still some people who lack awareness and often "steal" garbage into the stream at night, making it difficult for the authorities to control.
Mr. Le Thanh Nghi, Chairman of Mai Sao Commune People's Committee, said: In order to reduce the situation of littering in the stream in Lang Nac village as well as improve the efficiency of waste treatment in the area, since 2024, the Commune People's Committee has worked with Dong Tam Cooperative to discuss the implementation of a waste collection plan in the commune. At the same time, coordinate with the above unit to conduct a survey and collect people's opinions on contracting with a collection unit. However, out of more than 800 households in the commune, only about 100 households agree and are willing to pay the collection fee. Therefore, the collection has not been implemented due to lack of funds.
According to the leader of Mai Sao Commune People's Committee, to overcome the situation of people littering into streams in Lang Nac village, in the immediate future, the Commune People's Committee will strengthen propaganda for local people to raise awareness and responsibility for environmental protection. In addition, the commune will continue to strengthen its grasp of the area, receive feedback and recommendations from local people to promptly remind and take measures to handle cases of intentional littering into the environment. At the same time, strictly inspect and monitor waste discharge sources in the area to contribute to environmental protection.
