Students choose textbooks at a bookstore in Ho Chi Minh City in recent days.

Speaking to Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter, Mr. Ngo Van Tuyen, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City, said that up to this point, primary and secondary schools in the district have announced to parents the textbooks that their children will study in the new school year so that parents can have information.

According to Mr. Tuyen, in the face of the risk of counterfeit and pirated books appearing on the market, the VietnamEducation Publishing House has also issued a warning and the Department of Education and Training of Binh Tan District has advised parents to register to buy textbooks at school. "Registering to buy books at school helps parents buy the right books, enough books, avoiding the risk of buying counterfeit and pirated books on the market," Mr. Tuyen said.

This morning (July 14), Ms. Tran Thi Thu Huong, Principal of Dinh Tien Hoang Primary School, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, also said that for first graders, the school will only guide parents to register to buy textbooks on the day of submitting application documents.

"For 4th grade students (this year studying under the 2018 General Education Program - PV), homeroom teachers also inform parents to wait until students gather at the beginning of the school year to register to buy textbooks from the school. The school buys books on their behalf to avoid the risk of buying fake books," said Ms. Huong.

How to distinguish real textbooks from fake ones?

In many bookstores in Ho Chi Minh City, the atmosphere has been very lively in recent days. Many students want to buy textbooks soon so they can learn in advance the content they will study in the new year.

Many parents and students need to buy textbooks early to prepare for the new school year.

Not only that, the online book market is also very vibrant. Many online "book markets" have been opened, introducing to parents that they provide all textbooks, from grade 1 to grade 12.

Recently, in some localities, through inspection, the authorities have discovered hundreds of fake textbooks. Textbooks of the Vietnam Education Publishing House have been illegally printed.

How to distinguish between real and fake books? Recently, the official Fanpage of the Vietnam Education Publishing House has posted an article warning parents, students and teachers about the risks of fake books and how to distinguish between real and fake books (pirated books).

According to the Vietnam Education Publishing House, pirated books are books that individuals/organizations copy/scan from real books and then reprint, with the same content and presentation as the real books. Many pirated books do not ensure full content and quality of illustrations to save printing costs. Pirated books are sold at many different prices, which can be lower, but there are also places that sell pirated books at the same price as the listed price on the cover of the real books.

Pirated books are often cropped, smaller in size than real books, sloppily bound, and have thin spines that can easily cause pages to come loose or be missing. Pirated books are often printed with lower quality than real books, using low-quality paper, and not using special printing technologies (foil stamping, matte lamination, etc.).

When buying pirated or low-quality books, consumers have unintentionally affected their own interests. Students are not allowed to use quality books with protected origins. The images and content in the books are blurred, unclear, and unclear, leading to impaired vision if poor quality books are used for a long time. Some of the content in pirated books is retyped but not censored like real books, which can distort knowledge.

With fake books, the stamp codes are printed with the same serial number so they cannot be activated. If students buy fake books, they will not be able to access and use the electronic learning materials of the Vietnam Education Publishing House.

Where to buy textbooks in Ho Chi Minh City?

Vietnam Education Publishing House said parents can buy textbooks at:

- Educational Book Store: 231 Nguyen Van Cu, Ward 4, District 5 and online book sales channel: https://phuongnamretail.vn/ .

- Southern Center for Books and Educational Equipment: 240 Tran Binh Trong, Ward 4, District 5.

- Nguyen Tri Phuong Bookstore and School Equipment: No. 223 Nguyen Tri Phuong, Ward 9, District 5.

Textbooks for grades 4, 8, and 11 are continuing to be delivered to localities in July to ensure adequate supply before the new school year begins.

As reported by Thanh Nien Newspaper, the Market Management Department of Ca Mau Province coordinated with the Vietnam Education Publishing House in Can Tho City in early July to organize a team to inspect companies and stores distributing textbooks in the province. Through the inspection, the authorities discovered hundreds of fake books in subjects such as: Math for grade 3, Vietnamese for grade 3, English for grade 4, English for grade 6, etc. The distribution stores were unable to provide invoices and legal documents for the above books and were administratively fined. The Market Management Department of Ca Mau Province also forced the destruction of all confiscated books because they did not have invoices, documents, and papers showing their legal origin according to regulations.
