Harvard Tension: International Students Fear Graduation, Freshmen Fear Admission

(Dan Tri) - At Harvard, the atmosphere is so gloomy and heavy that some international students are worried and do not dare to attend the graduation ceremony.

In a court filing on May 28 for an upcoming hearing, Maureen Martin, Harvard's director of immigration services, said that not only international students, but also a number of American students, are considering whether to enroll at Harvard next fall.

The reason for these hesitations is due to a series of recent moves by the US government towards the school. Ms. Martin affirmed that the recent moves by President Donald Trump's administration have caused the lives of nearly 7,000 international students at Harvard to fall into a state of serious disorder and anxiety.

The atmosphere was so gloomy and heavy that some international students were worried and did not dare to attend the upcoming graduation ceremony, for fear that appearing at this time would attract attention and cause them to encounter immigration problems.

Many international students have canceled flights to other countries, whether for academic research or to visit family during the summer, and fear they may not be able to re-enter the United States.

Although a federal judge has temporarily suspended Harvard's ban on recruiting international students, Harvard has warned that damage has already been done to the school, most notably to its admissions practices and academic reputation.

The federal judge overseeing Harvard's two lawsuits against the U.S. government, Allison Burroughs, will hear arguments from the plaintiffs and defendants at an upcoming hearing.

Based on the evidence and testimony provided in court, the judge will decide whether long-term protections for international students at Harvard are needed in the current circumstances.

The upcoming hearing is the first major step in a legal confrontation between Harvard and the White House under US President Donald Trump.

While the administration claims to be fighting racism and extremist ideologies at Harvard, Harvard says this is a campaign of “systemic retaliation” targeting the school’s operational autonomy and academic freedom.

Harvard said the government's demands threaten more than 25 percent of its student body, which includes international students from more than 140 countries and territories.

Harvard accused the government of trying to "force" the school into certain orientations regarding admissions, recruitment, scientific research orientation, teaching orientation...

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump and US government officials have repeatedly asserted that Harvard is just “an example” and that other universities may face similar measures.

Representatives of the Massachusetts state government (USA), where Harvard University is located, also announced on May 28 that the state government is on Harvard's side in this legal battle.
