Speaking at the Southern Regional Pharmacovigilance Conference 2025, which took place for 2 days in mid-June in Binh Thuan province, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Binh, Deputy Director of Cho Ray Hospital, emphasized the importance of connecting pharmacovigilance and clinical pharmacy activities.

That is because currently, the rate of chronic kidney disease and cancer in Vietnam is increasing.

According to the latest epidemiological data, chronic kidney disease is becoming one of the most serious public health burdens globally. It is estimated that 10-13% of the world's population, equivalent to 800-850 million people, is affected by this disease.

According to Dr. Binh, the use of drugs becomes complicated in the treatment of kidney diseases and impaired kidney function.

Patients with chronic kidney failure need to take many medications, and physiological changes due to the disease can also cause patients to experience more adverse reactions to medication than normal people.

In the field of cancer treatment, chemotherapy and targeted therapy are highly effective for patients, but also come with high toxicity. The drugs often have a narrow therapeutic window, require high doses and strict adherence to the regimen, making patients susceptible to serious side effects.

According to the latest GLOBOCAN data, in 2022, the world recorded about 20 million new cancer cases and is expected to increase to 21 million cases. In Vietnam, there are currently about 190 thousand new cancer cases.

Dr. Nguyen Quoc Binh, who is currently the Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Drug Information and Adverse Drug Reactions Center (DI&ADR), emphasized that with the above situation, comprehensive, appropriate and effective treatment strategies are required.

In which, pharmacovigilance and clinical pharmacy play a pivotal role in ensuring safety and optimizing treatment effectiveness for patients.
