Báo Cà MauBáo Cà Mau05/08/2023

In July 2023, Ca Mau General Hospital received 47 dengue fever cases treated in the infectious disease department, of which 5 cases were diagnosed with severe dengue shock syndrome and 2 cases with warning signs. In July alone, the hospital received 13 dengue fever cases, but 3 cases were diagnosed with severe dengue shock syndrome and 2 cases with warning signs.

During the rainy season, dengue fever increases rapidly. People need to go to medical facilities early for examination and timely treatment when there are signs of prolonged fever.

Doctor CK1 Nguyen Van Lang, Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Ca Mau General Hospital, informed that the cause of dengue fever is due to mosquito bites, transmitting the virus to humans (Aedes mosquitoes - striped mosquitoes). The peak period of dengue fever is usually in the rainy season, from July to October. Currently, there is no vaccine to prevent dengue fever, no specific treatment, so detection and treatment of the disease is very important.

"The common symptom of dengue fever in adults and children is fever, however, adults only have a mild fever. In particular, in the elderly, fever symptoms are often overlooked, leading to late detection and untimely treatment. Adults often have many underlying diseases, so the symptoms sometimes do not focus on dengue fever but on other diseases. Children with dengue fever will be diagnosed earlier than adults," said Dr. Nguyen Van Lang.

While being treated at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Mr. Kim Van Vu, Hamlet 7, Ward 8, Ca Mau City, said: "At home, I had a fever, I went to the pharmacy to buy medicine for 2 days but it did not improve, when I went to the doctor, the doctor tested and diagnosed me with dengue fever so I was hospitalized for treatment". Mr. Truong Vu Anh, Hamlet 1, Tac Van Commune, Ca Mau City, said: "I had a headache and fever, I went out to buy medicine but it did not improve, when I went to the doctor, the doctor diagnosed me with dengue fever so I was hospitalized for treatment, now my health is stable, I will probably be discharged in a few days".

Dengue fever patients are being treated at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Ca Mau General Hospital.

Currently, dengue fever is in season. The symptoms of the disease are easily confused with common viral fever, causing patients to be subjective and the disease can easily become severe, causing many complications, even endangering life.

Doctor CK1 Nguyen Van Lang added that there are many complications in adults. There are two most prominent complications in dengue fever, the first is gastrointestinal bleeding in adults. In Vietnam, many adults have gastric ulcers combined with dengue fever, causing platelets to decrease, causing gastrointestinal bleeding. The second complication is increased liver enzymes. Liver disease in adults is more common than in children, liver failure in dengue fever is extremely dangerous. In Ca Mau, there are several cases that had to be transferred to a higher level due to acute liver failure. These are two dangerous complications. In adults, there is another special case, women often have menorrhagia during their menstrual cycle, the amount of menstrual blood is much larger than normal menstruation. This is also a serious complication caused by dengue fever.

"To cope with the increasing epidemic situation, the Department of Infectious Diseases has organized training for all doctors on the new dengue fever prevention regimen according to Decision No. 2760/QD-BYT of the Ministry of Health dated July 4, 2023 on "Guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of dengue fever", Doctor CK1 Nguyen Van Lang shared.

Every citizen needs to proactively learn about the causes, symptoms, treatment and prevention of dengue fever to protect the health of themselves and their families. When showing signs of fever, people should proactively go to medical facilities for early diagnosis and timely treatment, to avoid the disease becoming more serious, causing many complications, and endangering life./.
