Sophisticated tricks

“Deepfake” is a combination of “deep learning” and “fake”, which is a method of creating fake technology products in the form of audio, images or even videos, by sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI). Deepfake is a technology that creates audio, image and video technology products that fake real-life objects with very high accuracy. Based on the image file of a real-life person's face and voice, Deepfake will use algorithms to recreate the face and voice that match the facial features and expressions of another person, then create a fake video of the real-life object.

To commit fraud and appropriate property of social network users, first, the subject creates a fake social network account with the same information and profile picture as the user or takes over the user's social network, then collects personal information, images, videos with voice posted publicly on the social network account and then uses Deepfake technology to create animated images and fake videos of the user talking online with the same face, voice tone and form of address.

Or the subject creates a fake social network account with the same information and profile picture as the user, befriends the victim in the friend list and sends messages to borrow money according to a pre-existing scenario. In some cases, the subject hijacks the user's social network account to directly message the victim in the friend list. To gain the victim's trust, the subject uploads available Deepfake videos to the video call channel, making the victim recognize the image and voice of an acquaintance and transfer money according to the subject's request.

With Deepfake technology, fake videos have high accuracy, making it difficult to distinguish between real and fake. However, videos created by the subject often have general content, not completely consistent with the actual context of communication with the victim, which can make the victim suspicious and detect. To cover up the above shortcomings, the subjects often create videos with difficult to hear sound, unclear images, similar to video calls with unstable signals made in areas with weak mobile or wifi coverage.

Raise awareness

According to the Provincial Police, recently, in the province Although An Giang has not yet discovered any cases of people being scammed and having their property appropriated using Deepfake technology, it is predicted that in the coming time, this type of crime will develop strongly, seriously affecting the situation of order and social security. In order to proactively prevent and combat crimes that take advantage of Deepfake technology to scam and appropriate property in the area, the Provincial Police have directed the police of units and localities to strengthen propaganda and disseminate methods and tricks of scamming and appropriating property by faking video calls to agencies, businesses and people in the area... In addition, the police of units and localities have organized well the work of receiving reports and denouncing crimes; grasping the situation, proactively detecting and combating activities using cyberspace to scam and appropriate property.

To proactively prevent, detect, combat, handle and stop this type of crime, Chairman of the People's Committee of An Giang province Nguyen Thanh Binh requested agencies, units and localities to strengthen propaganda on methods and tricks of criminals using Deepfake technology to defraud and appropriate property via social networks to raise awareness and vigilance among officials, civil servants, public employees, students, workers and the masses against this type of crime. When receiving any message or video call with an unstable or unclear signal to borrow money, you need to call directly to the recipient's phone number to verify, do not call via social networking applications such as Zalo, Messenger, Viber, Telegram... because these accounts may have been hijacked. In case of suspicion of impersonation to defraud or appropriate property, you need to immediately report to the nearest police agency for timely support and handling.

The provincial police said that the use of Deepfake technology to fake video calls to scam and appropriate property is a very new and sophisticated trick. Therefore, people are advised to be vigilant when receiving video calls, and to verify by contacting the phone number of telecommunications networks to verify or contact directly to confirm and receive money, to avoid being scammed and causing property damage.
